In Repose

In Repose

A Poem by TheDuraMater

Our eyes fall in love with every burning building we meet

And it’s hard not to take off running down every abandonded street

The vines are angry, tightly wrapped around both our throats

As we squirm and shoot fireworks, the only sound we know

The only sound we know

Dirty buildings match the slightly cleaner town

Don’t walk on the grass, do not f**k around

We are skeletons charged with breaking our own bones

I guess the only crime here is spending the sentence alone

The only way we know

Dressed in rags, an enriching experience

I bribe my heart with the taste of your lips

And we lay in repose for the vultures to see

Making promises that things get better than this

And when the sun sets is it all over?

And when the rain comes, do you hate me again?

And when the sidewalk begins to crack and fray

All the memories of this place fade away

Your head is pounding, your nose is running away

Like it’s left a trail of the worst secrets to say

So I follow it and I don’t like what I see

Red eyes and hollow hearts buried in me

As we squirm and shoot fireworks, the only sound we know

The only sound we know, this place is the only one we know
