![]() Chapter 1: The Strangest DayA Chapter by The Dudeman (Kenneth T)
I didn't realize it at first... I had no idea what had happened.
Damn. There's no chance of arriving to school on time now. When I awoke, the clock read 7:45. School started at 8:00 sharp. I hastily threw on my clothes, shoes and backpack and sprinted out the door. Breakfast was irrelevant now, there was no time for it and adrenaline kept the hunger from reaching me anyway. Forcing myself to act cool, I passed through the main entrance ten minutes late. The windows of the office gave a perfect view of my presence, but the secretaries inside paid me no attention. I continued on, unchallenged by staff of any kind. The door of my first class was left open, and I entered and sat down in my assigned desk. The entirety of the class remained engrossed in the exercises in front of them. Trying to attract as little attention as possible, I opened my backpack and removed my Algebra book. Not knowing exactly what problems the class was assigned, I sat in silence, worried about my punishment.. The punishment never came. It seemed my tardiness went unnoticed, or at least ignored by the teacher. A half-an-hour passed, and I waived participation, never raising my hand for any of the questions asked to the class. An unbelievable clumsy and disorganized girl who sat in the desk ahead of mine accidentally pushed the same folder off of her desk for the third time. Frustrated, she resorted to placing the folder on the desk behind her,out of reach from her wild elbows. I tapped her shoulder, wanting to tell her that my desk was already too crowded and that she should find a different solution. My attempts at her attention failed, and she remained oblivious. "Hey," I whispered. No response. "Hey," my voice raised to a normal speaking tone. No response. Now it was my turn for frustration. With a grimace, I pushed the folder onto the floor. The heavy slap it made startled most of the class, especially the clumsy girl, who shrieked in fright. "Stay off of my desk," I warned. This was unusually cold of me, but I didn't care. Her panicked eyes oscillated from the top of my desk and the folder on the floor. I couldn't believe her disbelief; it was obvious what had happened. "What happened?" a neighboring boy asked. "It just...jumped." I sighed. "I pushed it," I explained. The teacher looked up from his desk. "What's going on?" he asked. "Nothing," half a dozen students lied simultaneously and resumed their work. In the rush between classes, I spotted Brock in the hall. Squeezing through the human traffic, I walked alongside him. "Hey, man." I offered. He said nothing in reply. I lightly shoved his shoulder to provoke a response and momentarily lost balance. Where I expected resistance, there was none. I watched in shock as my flesh passed through his. I reeled back and passed through the bodies of others walking the hall as if they were immaterial. Wild with panic, I flew down the halls and out of the building, hoping for this nightmare to end. Outside there were answers, but I would not like them. © 2011 The Dudeman (Kenneth T) |
