ConversationA Chapter by The Dudeman (Kenneth T)A little bit of jealousy? O.o
Anna walked around the edge of the plaza in front of the courthouse. It was the largest open space in City and was the only reasonable place to train soldiers. Small targets were held up by some and were stabbed at by others. Once the Demons started to descend, those wooden staffs would become spears, and the targets Demon necks. Other drills were being conducted as well. Soldiers with large square shields practiced changing formations, imagining swarms of Demons attacking from different angles.
These soldiers were just common people with jobs of all kinds. City had no standing army, for there was no threat at all except whenever the Demons came. These people were all volunteers, every one of them. Almost every able man and many women too had volunteered to risk life and limb to protect City. Of course, protecting City meant protecting their families as well. Anna spied her father, shouting orders at a team of archers. She walked on, leaving the plaza behind, uninterested with the sweat of military training. Another Angel had fallen the other day, and had been christened Storm. Anna hadn't got much of a chance to see him, but she spotted him now, flying above the rooftops, having an aerial wrestling match with Sky. They would crash together and try to pin one another in mid-air, falling as they went, separating at the last moment before hitting the rooftops in order to regain altitude and repeat the process. Wanting to get a better view, Anna climbed a fire escape to the roof of a three story house. She sat on the edge, her feet dangling off the side, and gave a small jump as Aurora landed next to her. "He sure is something, Sky." the Angel said. Anna turned her head away. Aurora was the last person she wanted to see right now. Anna still couldn't get over how she appeared out of nowhere and then stole all of Sky's attention. "I know what you're thinking," Aurora continued, "You think that because I'm an Angel that I have an unfair advantage with Sky." "Damn right." Anna thought. "But you know what I think," said Aurora, taking her eyes off Anna to look up at Sky and Storm, "I think that being with me makes him sad. I'm a constant reminder to him of a destiny that he doesn't want. But when he was with you, I think that he could maybe forget that." Anna remained silent, no longer out of frustration, but in deep thought. She never would have thought that being an ordinary human was an advantage in winning Sky. "Talk to him, see if you can cheer him up, and succeed where I failed." With that, she took to the air and quickly flew away. Looking up, Anna saw that Sky and Storm had finished their scrimmage and were hovering a short distance above the rooftops. Sky waved his arm at Anna, and with a smile and renewed hope, she waved back. © 2010 The Dudeman (Kenneth T) |
