Wings

Wings

A Story by thedarkrocket

  • After i got back home from flying around, i looked at my clock and realized that i had stood Jenny up. I couldnt believe that i did this for the second night in the row. I had every intention of being there on time tonight, but after i accidentally burned down part of my house, i was so angry that i needed to get some air. I really wish that this she would understand. But i already knew that she wouldnt. There was only one thing that i could do, and it was tell her about everything. Maybe it would be better if i showed her. I didnt have anymore time to waste. I got up off of my bed and stood next to the window. After i was sure that it was clear, i took off out of the window and flew west towards her house, with the wind ruffling my wings. It always felt nice on these sort of nights.

I flew up as high as i could so that i could disappear into the night without being seen. The night usually provided cover for my charcoal gray wings. After a few huge strokes, i let my wings hang open as i started to glide down towards her neighborhood. I brought my wings in tight so that i could aim myself correctly. It started to appear that every light in her house was off, but i could see her truck in the driveway. I couldn't be that late, could i? It was only 11 p.m. Maybe i missed my last opportunity. It was time to find out as tucked my wings in and landed roughly in her backyard...

I stumbled and rolled twice before finally catching myself. I stood up and climbed up her back stairs. I could see a faint light in her room on the second floor. I jumped and grabbed onto the bottom of the porch outside of her room. I pulled myself up slowly, trying to make sure not wake her dad. As i climbed onto the porch, i could see her in her room laying on her bed reading. I decided to tap on the window. I waited about 5 seconds and as i was about to tap again, i finally saw her shadow near the window. She moved towards the sliding door and it opened slowly. I stepped back and smiled at her as she came out.

"Get the hell out of here now", she whispered, "im done with you". I looked at her. She looked pretty intense. Her cute blonde curls hung down to her shoulders, yet now they looked violent as they outlined her angry face.

"Im sorry. I know understand that you're angry, but i brought you something", i said. I reached into the bag hanging on my shoulder and pulled out a box of candy and flowers that i neatly placed in there. Well, it sort of looked like flowers still. The bouquet was mangled pretty bad and the box of candy completely crushed. I really need to work on my stealth landings. "Okay, this looks bad, i know. But these were really beautiful flowers at the time i bought them". I tried to sooth her with my most heart-warming smile. Didnt work.

"I have nothing to say to you right now. You need to leave in the next 10 seconds, or im gonna throw you off the balcony", she said more angrily this time. I didnt know what to do at this moment. On my way over here, i knew i needed to make things better, but i didnt actually have a plan. I had my wings tucked tightly against my back, but i didnt have my jacket to cover it. So i didnt want to turn my back towards her. And at that moment, i had it all figured out.

"Okay fine, if you want me out of here, then im gone. But im not taking the stairs". I stepped back and sat on the railing. Before she could react, i flipped myself backwards off the railing. I heard her shriek and dart to the railing. But before she could do open her mouth, i let my wings spread out wide and flapped them twice so that i was back up near the balcony, staring her in the eyes...

She looked at my with the most shocked look on her face. I hoovered right in front of her for a few seconds before going up a few feet and finally ascending on the balcony. About 2 minutes went by with her just staring at me before she finally said anything.

"What... you have.... wi.. wi...wings. I dont understand", she stuttered. She finally took a step forward and touched my left wing. She looked so beautiful under this moonlight. I found it hard not to smile.

"Jenny, i wanted to tell you about this for the longest time. But its kind of hard to tell the person you love that you have wings. And i was only late tonight because something bad happened and i needed to get some air". She looked at me oddly. I knew this was coming. I just blew my chances for sure. I'll never have her now. Why would she wanna be with a winged-freak, especially one that can shoot fire from his hands. This was turning into a disaster by the second. "Look, if this is the end of the line for me, then at least tell me if i ever had a shot".

"Nate, your wings wont change anything. Yes, its pretty strange, but its pretty cool once you take it all in. I just need you to give me a moment. This is a lot to process".

I stood there looking at her. This was my time to act. I can't stand it anymore. I need to do something now. She is soooo amazingly gorgeous and i would be a fool if i just let this go.

"Jenny, i hope you weren't too busy, cause we're about to leave"

    "And where are we going?".

"We're just gonna take a little ride". At that moment, i scooped her up in my arms, stood up on her railing, and jumped. She screamed a little as i let my wings fully extend and i pushed my wings down. The force of the wings threw us upward before we hit the ground and once i had it under control, pushed my wings up and down with two powerful thrusts as we took off into the sky..

We were moving at about 50 miles per hour through the sky before she finally spoke. "Where are we going?" she yelled over the wind. "There is something that i want you to experience".

I flew high about earth below us. We could see all of the lights from the cities we passed over. Finally i saw the bay bridge. I held her more tightly in my arms as i started to angle myself towards the ground. I flew at a steady rate. I looked down and saw her face. She looked very excited. But there was something in her eyes that made my heart flutter. She looked as if this was the happiest moment of her life. I kissed her forehead and she looked up at me and smiled. I started to slow down as we reached the bridge. I landed on the top of one of the posts.

"Oh my god, nate, that was the most amazing thing ever" she yelled. I started laughing. "Well, i wanted you to experience the amazing feeling that i get to feel every night. But its not over yet".

I moved behind her and wrapped my arms around her waist. She was startled at first. "Wait, what are you about to do?", she asked in a panicked voice. "Jenny, just trust me, i wont let anything happen to you". I stepped to the edge of the post and jumped. We were falling headfirst towards the water before i let my wings expand. I tilted upwards just as we were about to hit the water. I flapped my wings with rapid strokes as we sped forward, just above the water. With each gust of my wings, the force caused the water to jolt up and the mist hit our faces. We were flying right within the reflection of the moon hitting the water.

She was gripping my arms pretty tightly, but must have realized i had it under control. She let go with her left arm and let it fall near the water. I tilted slightly to the left and her hand was now grazing the water. I finally flew up higher and headed towards Angel Island. "You think this is cool now, wait til you experience this somewhere like Hawaii". She smiled and wrapped her arms around mine again, but much more gentle now. I landed on the top of Angel Island. I let go of her and she stumbled a little bit.

"It feels really weird walking again", she said as she laughed lightly.

I smiled at her and stood close to her. I faced her and grabbed the bottom of her chin. I kissed her. "I'd like you to stay the night with me here and watch the sunrise"....
