The other child " prologue Cody was not your average child growing up, He would rather
be alone than make friends, and during his time in elementary school he would
always sit next to an oak tree about 20 feet from the rusty swing set covered
in age and graffiti. All the kids shunned for the fear of what they don't
understand. Cody wasn't always like this. When he was merely five his mother
and father vanished out of trace, the police force searched for them for 11
months but no evidence was found. The loss of his parent put a hole through his
heart he was alone. His Uncle took him in when he had nothing to live for.
Though his uncle lives with a mental disability Cody never felt so loved, but
that didn't end the deep depression he still carries. Even though he hasn't
seen his parents for 5 years he still wonders what happened to them, will they
come back? He hopes that one day he will find them and just hold them in his
arms once more. Chapter two- High school blues.
Today was Cody's first day of high school it wasn't very new to him, all it seemed was kids bigger and more hard headed. He stepped in through the door stopping to scan the area; it had a very distinct smell of air freshener. He ignored the burning in his nose and kept the more important things in the front of his mind. After one of the secretaries’ show him to his locker it wasn't in the matter of time he found himself pinned against his locker by a pea brained senior. The gigantic behemoth spoke in a threatening tone "Oh my god, look at this freak!" His friend laughed, Cody said nothing he stood silently with his face pressed against the cold steel. "Hey leave him alone you!" a girl yelled down the hallway. The bullies look at each other than to her. She wore dark jeans with tears in the knees, and an Asking Alexandria band T-shirt. Her skin was porcelain, and her hair pitch black, hanging just over her eyes. Cody has never seen someone as beautiful as her, well in his perspective any ways. The bully said in mockery "Or what? You’re gonna' suck my blood?" Just before she could reply in a snide comment a teacher on hall duty spotted the commotion and asked what was going on. Before you knew it the bullies fled and went off to class, "I suppose you to stay out of trouble young man, or next time won't be a warning, now off to class," the teacher said, then walked away. "Hey are you alright" the girl asked Cody, "Yeah I guess so" Cody replied "so what’s your name?" "my-my names Cody" he answered "well hello Cody, My name is Priscilla, I guess I will see you around; I'm kind of' late for class" She said then left. Cody thought it was love at first a site. Maybe high school won’t be so bad after all. At last! The bell finally rang. The halls were now flooded with teachers trying to keep order and students trying to escape the clutches of the school. Cody walked out with accomplishment, he finished his first day. Now he just has to walk home. After his foot touches the pavement the girl calls out to him from nowhere, "Cody! I've been looking everywhere for you, come meet my friends" she said excitedly. Cody didn't really have much of a choice, he certainly didn't want to ignore her, So then he proceeds his way towards her small group of friends, All dressed in black as Priscilla and as well as him. "This is Damien, Alexis, and Lucian", she introduced " "and this is Cody guys." All of them said hello to Cody. Cody was shy at first he's never really been in a group before, it was all new to him. They then walked with each other until all of them split up to walk separate ways towards home. After Priscilla said goodbye Cody was then alone, back to what he was use too. Once he got home, the house was a lot quieter than usual. His uncle was sleeping on the couch, so he made to his room as noiseless as possible to avoid waking him up. After all, the doctor advised his uncle to rest often. After he made it to his room he opened the top drawer if his dresser to where he keeps the only picture of his parents from before they disappeared. He studied the picture then fell onto his bed an fell asleep. Its wasn't until the late afternoon he woke up to hear his house phone ring. He looked at his alarm clock to see what time it is 7:00, he groaned. Once he picked up the phone he said "hello?" No one answered, he then asked again "Hello? Is anyone there?" He then heard breathing "Come on I can hear you, now answer me" He was getting irritated now. Then the person on the other line finally spoke. "I know where they are..." Chapter four
" Winter Dance Everyday Cody heard the same voice in his head over, and over again "I know here they are...” The voice has been haunting him for a month now. He has tried everything to contact the mysterious caller but still no luck finding him. Could this man know about his parents? Or was it someone’s idea of a joke? He had so many questions that were merely impossible to truly answer, he has school tomorrow as well. The fact that the winter dance was coming. It has gotten the school extremely wild lately everyone running around trying to find dates. It was complete and total madness. You couldn't walk an inch in the school without seeing posters and the preppy cheerleaders advertising the dance. Cody found all of this to be stupid, what was so important about dances anyway? "Hey, Cody" Priscilla said interrupting Cody's deep thinking. "You know I don’t have anyone to go to the dance too" She hesitated to say. "So if your free do you think you could go...with me?" Cody could tell she was nervous; he was too. "Um, sure I’ll go, so when do I- uh, what time does the dance start?" Cody could tell he was stuttering. "8'o clock!" a cheerleader shouted as she walked past them, "wow was she really listening the whole time?" Cody thought to himself. "Great I’ll see you later" Priscilla said, and then hugged him and left. Cody felt as if his heart had jumped out of his chest. He felt as if his heart had skipped a beat. He brushed his black hair out of his eyes and watched her walk away. Though he seems happy now, He still has to worry about that call a month ago. Chapter five
" Unforgettable Surprise Today was the dance, Cody has just got done getting ready. He washed his face with some warm water then headed down stairs. "Mike I'm going out I’ll be back by 12," His uncle just nodded his head then continued to watch the golf channel. The walk to school was cold and harsh, The ice-cold air bit his face as he strolled down the sidewalk, Cody placed his hands in the pockets of his jacket to keep them warm. Cody finally made it to his school the sign said, "Ridgeview High school" Some letters were crooked to seem like no one felt like dealing with it any ways. The school seemed quite old it had many stains of age on the brick walls. It seemed a lot older in the winter though, Cody couldn't figure out why though. Finally, he made it into the school. He could already hear the music coming from the gymnasium, looks like the dance has just started. Cody afterwards pushed through the double doors to the gym to see Priscilla sitting on a chair waiting for him. She later caught discovered him on him and waved signaling him to come over there. "this is for all you young lovers out there" the DJ said and then played a slow song. She then grabbed his hand "Come on, let’s dance," after that, pulled him into the dance floor. She then wrapped her arms around them, and subsequently, they precisely swayed back and forth to the music, Cody has never really danced before so he only tried to follow what everyone else was doing. Then out of the blue one of the people who worked for the school ran into the room holding a phone "Cody!" she said in panic, "your uncle, he, he had a heart attack!" Cody was still; his mouth was open in shock; he couldn't move. First, his parents, he can't lose his uncle...not yet. Chapter six
" Gift of the forgotten "Priscilla, I have to go. I'm-" "No, I understand, please see if your uncle is all right" Priscilla said after she cut Cody off. Both, stared at each other before Cody finally walks out as she watched him leave for his uncle. Once Cody left, a small tear ran down her cheek before she wiped it off. The Hospital wasn't very far from the school, only three blocks, easy enough for Cody to sprint all the way to the hospital, since he doesn't have a car, nor someone to drive him. Cody then busted through the doors in a hurry, "Are you all right?" One of the nurses said behind the front counter, "yes I need to see my uncle, Mike Rivers." Cody said. "Okay he’s in room 32B" the nurse replied. The town was relativity small so everyone knew each other as much as to not ask for certain information. "Cody..." his uncle said in a weak voice "Uncle, are you all right?" Cody said "Yes I'll be fine, but there's something I need to tell you" "what is it?" Cody asked "your parents, before they disappeared, they wanted me to give you this when the time was right" His uncle said in a low voice. He then handed him a strange medallion with a symbol of a Crow on it, "what is it?" Cody asked staring down at it. "Some secrets, you have to find on your own" his uncle said. He later proceeded to doze off, Cody then kissed him on the forehead and left placing the medallion into his pocket. Chapter seven " Lucien may know. "Well I don't know I had seen that tear when he left," Alexis said. "Alexis, his uncle had a heart attack. He had to leave I was just...". "Just what?" Alexis asked. "I was just worried for him" Priscilla finished her sentence. "Ha, I knew it. You like him don't you?" Alexis called out, Right before Priscilla was about to answer Cody walked in. "We'll finish this conversation later" Alexis Whispered into Priscilla's ear However, she didn't know that Cody heard her. He kept his mouth shut. He didn't want to seem nosy. "I need your help with something," Cody said, “sure what is it" Priscilla said. "When I went to the hospital, my uncle gave me this strange medallion; I was wondering if maybe you guys could help me figure out what it was." Cody said as he pulled the Medallion out of his pocket. "Wait, Maybe Lucien can help you with this. He seems to be interested in strange things like this. I'm sure he as a book or two about it, it'd surprise me if he didn't" Alexis said, then Priscilla agreed. "He's usually in the library. That's probably the best place to find him." Priscilla said, pointing the way towards the library, "thanks" Cody replied. Then made his way towards this library in hopes to find Lucien. What a strange name Cody thought to himself as he walked down the halls of the school towards the library. Finally, Cody makes it in the library, finding Lucien sitting in a chair reading a novel with no cover. He had black hair with a red streak on his banes. It was most likely dyed. "Alexis said that you could help me" Cody asked him in a shy manner, "Depends" Lucien said, "They said you might be able to tell me what this is" Cody said afterwards he showed him the medallion with the crow on both faced. That caught his attention. He put his book down and looked even closer at the artifact after that he finally said "I've never seen anything like it, If you let me could you let me barrow it for a while, so I can figure out what the heck this is?" "sure" Cody said “Let me know if you find anything" he said, then walked away. Their encounter was brief, but hopefully Lucien can find out what this medallion is for, it may even help finding his beloved parents, or at least find out what happened before they disappeared. Chapter eight " Unknown Society.
"Why isn't he dead!" a mysterious voice boomed in anger, "I told you to eliminate him, not put him in the hospital!" The voice continued. "Do you realize what this man knows?" "no...no sir" another voice said. "He knows enough. That's all I can say," the higher voice said. "but never mind that, the boy is our next target, whatever his uncle knows. The boy is bound to know as well" the man said. "Find this boy and bring him to me, alive" The man demanded "yes, master" The other man said in obedience
Later, that night Cody got a call, It was Lucien. "Hello, did you find anything?" Cody answered, "Actually yes, but you’re going to have to show you, meet me at the public library ASAP." Cody spent no time continuing to talk, so he quickly hung up his cell phone, and then made his way out the door. The air was getting warmer, but it was still pretty cold out just enough for Cody to handle. On his way towards the library, he just so happens to pass the Cafe'. He has seen Priscilla as well as Alexis. They were sitting outside eating in talking. Cody didn't mean to eavesdrop, but he did. "Come I have seen the way you looked at him." Alexis said "Okay, Maybe he's a little cute, but still, how do I know if he likes me? "Trust me, Priscilla if he doesn't like you. I’ll do your homework for the rest of the year." Alexis said trying to sound persuasive. "You barley even do your homework in the first place!" Priscilla said. Cody decided that he heard enough and that if he stays even longer, he's going to get discovered. Cody knew who they were talking about; it was him, and he didn't have to think about it. He just knew it. Cody was almost to the library, and then he heard a disturbance from behind. Before he could turn around, a man called out. "I believe you have something that belongs to us." Chapter nine
" The man with no face The man looked normal at first, head eyes were covered with a tan Fedora, and he wore a trench coat matching the color of his hat. "Who are you?" Cody asked in demand. "That is none of your business, how about you hand it over before I get annoyed" the man replied, "What are you talking about" Cody said, "Don't play dumb with me, you know what I want" the man said in an irritated tone. "Well too bad cause I don't now leave me alone!" Cody yelled, "My boy, I'm afraid it’s not that easy, Now come with me!", the man reached for Cody's arm, but before he was able to successfully reach him, Cody hit him with a left hook knocking him to the ground as his hat flew off. "What are you?" Cody said to himself, the man was missing his eye, and nose, as if the skin was sewn over them. The man was out cold, Cody never felt this scared he ran as fast as he could to the library running on pure adrenaline. "Lucien!", "We have to get out of here, NOW!" Cody yelled, Lucien was confused he had no idea what was going on, "what is it Cody?" He asked in suspicious. "Someone, or something attacked me, we need to get to a safer place”, "What do you mean, something", Lucien asked. "He didn't have a a face!". Cody was scared, but Lucien... He was fascinated. "Wait Cody, before I tell you what I found I want you to tell me about this guy that attacked you" Lucien said, "Well, he wore a trench coat and a hat which he used to cover his face", "when he tried to kidnap me I hit him in the head." Cody continued, "When his hat flew off his eyes and nose wasn't there, it looked like his skin was sewn over them". "Weird from what I read, this may have something to do with this thing you gave me". Chapter ten "
Another day at school. "This medallion belongs to a society, that all I know, the name off it is completely unknown". "It says that in order to join they have to move your skin over your eyes and nose, it doesn't say why though". Lucien continued, "That medallion is part of some ritual they preform, again there's not that much information, I've told you all I know" Lucien said then gave Cody back the strange medallion. "Lucien there has to be more to this" Cody said, "I'm sorry Cody whoever they are, they don't want to be discovered, an they’re doing a pretty good job at staying hidden". Lucien replied as he walked out the door. "hi" Cody said back to her, "Me and Alexis has been talking, she said that mean an you should go on a date", "So if you want maybe me an you could go out to eat or something?" Chapter
eleven " no longer alone The cafe' was quite, the music played slowly echoing through the emptiness. It was Saturday so the there wasn't any high school students to accompany the cafe'. Cody and Priscilla sat across from each other watching the fan slowly spin on the ceiling, until the waitress broke the silence. "So what would you like?" she asked "I'll just have a coffee" Cody said, "I'll have a salad" Priscilla said shortly after, the waitress wrote down the orders and made her way towards the kitchen. "Cody, do you like me?" Priscilla asked right away, before he was able to answer she quickly cut him off "I'm sorry I didn't mean-" , "It’s okay, I think your... pretty" Cody said "Thanks Cody" she said, as she scratched her arm gently. The waitress came back with their orders; Cody's coffee was hot so he waited for it to cool off, while Priscilla played with her salad with her fork taking small bites. Then to break the silence, "Just a salad?" Cody asked "Yeah, I'm vegetarian, I don't eat meat" Priscilla replied. Cody then felt as if he was being watch, that strange tingling feeling. He turned his head to the window, but no one was there, "Something wrong?" she asked, "no" Cody said, but he still continued to have that feeling, he just ignored it, Thirty minutes have past, and the date finally came to an end. "Want me to walk you home?" Cody asked as they walk out of the door, "Actually, that would be great"; she said and let out of a little smile. They didn't live to far from each other only two or three blocks. During the walk Cody felt like he was being followed, just as he had felt in the cafe', he decided to keep ignoring it, for all he knew it could be nothing. Before Priscilla opened the door to her house she lightly kissed him on the cheek. Once she left he stood there and placed his two fingers to where her lips had met his skin. For once he didn't feel alone. Chapter
twelve " Deaths Whisper It's been a few days since Him and Priscilla had their first date. Ever since Cody has been feeling insecure. Someone is following him, yet he can’t find out who. It's been driving him crazy ever since. There was nothing he could do but wait, this person, or thing has to show itself sooner or later, or its just all in his head. Cody sat at the end of his bed playing with the medallion juggling it with his fingers, he thought of his uncle. It’s been three weeks since his heart attack but he was still in the hospital, Cody was starting to get worried. He tried visiting a few time but the nurses insisted his uncle to rest. Something seems suspicious, as if they are trying to keep him away. It was 12 in the morning an Cody's eyes were getting heavy. He decided that he was getting too tired to stay up any longer so he crawled up into his bed and feel asleep. "You guys didn't tell me you were going out" Cody said in surprise, "Yeah we've been dating for a few months now" Alexis said, Lucien was red faced. Cody wasn't jealous; after all he has Priscilla, someone that actually meant something to him. Damien kept his distance from everyone, he hasn't talked very much since he met Cody, he always had a weird look on him, always staring at him, but Cody didn't let it bother him, after all he may just be shy, Cody is too. "So are you ready to see Deaths Whisper?" Priscilla asked "It's said to be one of the most gruesome movies of the year", Cody nodded his head, he wasn't very fond of horror movies, but he did enjoy one every now and then. Lucien signed "This is going to take forever to get a seat", everyone in the group laughed, "Well looks like we’re gonna’ be here for a while" Alexis said with a smirk on her face. Just as they got in line, A slight movement in the bushes next to the building shook. Cody look over but seen nothing. Hopefully it was just a squirrel. Not one of those crazy psychopaths like that one guy. He just couldn't be so sure anymore.
Chapter thirteen " Unknown spy The movie has just finished, Cody and his friends now proceeded to walk out of the theater with everyone else as the credits role down the screen. "So what did you think"? Alexis asked Lucien. "It was kinda cheesy I must say" Lucien criticized. "Well I liked it" Cody said, Pricsilla Agreeing. They then started to walk back home. Then While they walked down the streets Cody heard tiny footsteps pattering on the sidewalk. He turned his head to see a extremely awkward creature. The rest of the group turned their heads as well. All of them wide eyed . They seemed too scared to scream or run. As if they were made of stone, petrified. The thing was relitivly small, about knee high. All it wore was ragged trousers that seemed to not have been washed for decades or more. It's skin was grey, not human like. In a low high pitched voice is said "You discovered me, please don't hurt me, I'll do anything!" Cody seemed to take advantage of its fear. "Okay then, how about you tell who the hell you are" The creature looked up at him "I am nothing yet but a spy for the Master" . "Who is this Master" Cody asked with a slightly threatning tone. "That I cannot say, The Master is everything, Or at least they want you to believe". "And who is they" Cody questioned it once more. "The unknown" The spy said softly, Almost to quite for Cody to hear. It all made since now. All these weeks he had thought the name of this cult was undiscovered. Unknown WAS the name. Cody felt so stupid. Unless this thing cannot say the true name. Cody didn't know what was true anymore. "Do you have a name?" Pricsilla asked randomly. The creature turned its sight over to her and answered, "Us spys are not treated the same way as the others, we were given away as childern to become spys". The creature continued. "They splice our genes with a species of monkey to give us the speed and agility to improve our stalking. Then they splice us with owls to improve our visions in areas that lack light, thus my appearence. It is a very painfull process, we were given away too late at birth, we were never given a true name. You may call me what you like" Everyone was intrigued by the spys story. "Maybe you can help me" Cody said. "Please come with us". The creature nodded in approval to help. they then carefully walked back to Cody house trying not to be discovered. I'm sure people won't be too happy with a strange creature like this walking around. The strange part about this though is that the spy decided to help them.
Chapter 14 - A new friend "So what you say is you guys are basically a cult"? Cody said somewhat interested in what this thing had to say. "Well not exactly, it’s more of a community, we all have different roles, and we aren't based purely in religious views" "And what is the name of this "Community" Cody said in hopes to get some information. "Even though I am helping you, I'm still not going to say our true name, for now on it's just The Unknown, It is forbidden to say our true name to outsiders. They will find out, There could be spies watching us at this very minute remember that." The fact of other spies watch them made Cody uneasy. He had very little to say as of right now about this society, just to keep safe. For some reason Cody has always been so gullible but right after he falls for he he starts to question things. Who knows, this thing could just be trying to scare him into changing the subject. "Okay... Before we get too close, I think we are going to need a name for you, that way it makes our conversations a lot easier" Cody said. "Maybe we could call him Jeffery" Cody had totally forgotten Priscilla was sitting on Cody’s desk listening. Cody looked at "Jeffery" then Priscilla "Hm I guess that will do" Cody said with a grin on his face. "So do you like your name Jeffery?" The creature shrug his shoulder most likely saying "Whatever floats your boat" in body language. Then the doorbell rings, the sound of the bell echoed throughout the house. All three of them look at each other. "I'll get it" Cody said jump off his bed then making his way down the stairs. Once Cody had gotten to the front door he noticed a white envelope on the floor, it must of been slipped in through the old mail slot. He picked it up and began to tear the top off it to retrieve the letter within. The paper was from the hospital. His uncle was coming home tomorrow. Cody cursed under his breath. He needs to find out what he's going to do with Jeffery. Last thing he needs is to give his uncle another heart attack. © 2012 TheDarkAuthorAuthor's Note
