A wish to PerseidA Story by Isaiah DunnThe moment I thought I lost everything. I wished upon a hundred shooting stars.“I can’t do this right now.” Those were the last words I got before she hung up the phone. The series of events leading to those words were incredibly complex and it was a situation that I put her into. It was my fault and I was going to lose her. I drove home and didn’t even go inside. I just sat on the top of my car and slowly started to break. How could I have been so stupid? I know I couldn’t be this happy. Some force out in the universe just wouldn’t allow it. I just stared at the sky tears starting to well in my eyes. “Please, if there is a god or some type of higher force out there just please make sure she’s ok. If anything just, please-. But the last words catch in my throat. The floodgates released tears streaming down my face I bury my head into my arms and let out what I really want from this higher power. “Please don’t let me get this happy and then take it away that quickly. Don’t let her come and go like this.” My heart pounding and my breathing becoming more and more erratic. I look up to the night sky full of stars and let out one more “please.” Then just as I am about to go fully over the edge something glitters in the corner of my eye. Hundreds of tiny dots streaming across the night sky. Burning red and blue. The Perseid meteor shower. It’s been hundreds if not thousands of years since these rocks from space have made their round trip to kamikaze into our atmosphere. The panic was forgotten I watched as these hundreds of brilliant lights slowly disappeared. Then a phone call. It was her. “Did you see that?” She said “Yeah, I sat outside just watching it.” “Well, are you still outside?” She asked Then her car turned down my street and pulled into my driveway. I quickly wipe the tears from my eyes and walk over to her. “I’m sorry.” She starts I just pull her into my arms and we stay there for a minute. Then I look into the sky and let out a silent “Thank You” To whatever force brought her back to me. © 2016 Isaiah Dunn |
