Blank Canvas (Prompt 3)A Story by TheBubbleManiacThis was for a contest. So this is where my mind took me for this idea.
I sat in my chair, listening to my boring English teacher as she taught my uninterested classmates. My mind wondered to places as I stared at the white board. Then something crossed my mind, that I thought was pretty silly. Who would like the color white? Silly right? But it's an interesting topic. I mean, really, who would be interested in such a blank color. It doesn't represent a mood. It's just empty.
"Thomas?" My teacher's voice interrupted my thoughts, making me jump. "Yes!" The whole class laughed as Mrs. Grendel tapped her fingers on her desk. 'What do you think the girl could be referring to a blank canvas." I just sat there with a confused expression. My hands began to sweat as Mrs. Grendel began to raise an eyebrow. The stares of all of my classmates began to weigh down on me, like smoke in a fire. "I know!" A girl in the back of the class raised her hand. Everyone jerked around and stared at the girl. They were dumbfounded. She was that one person who hardly ever talked in class. But the look on her face was eager. It's like she knew what the exact answer was. "Okay Hannah. Please tell us." Mrs. Grendel gave me a glare of disappointment, and I looked down. "It refers to the color white. The color white is an uncommon favorite color to anyone. But that's why it's my favorite. It means something like a blank canvas. You can put anything on a blank canvas. Whether it's a simple tree or maybe that house you saw once, that looked like a castle. It represents imagination, and you can make it mean anything you want. People think it doesn't mean anything, but really it does. If I were to take a white sheet of paper, I would be able to put something down on it." Hannah's words were so passionate, that they made me rethink about everything. "That was such a great response Hannah. Thank you!" Mrs. Grendel was both shocked and overjoyed with that passionate response. I was a bit jealous. I can't believe that girl, Hannah, likes the color white! The bell rang, and everyone rushed out of the classroom. As I stepped out of the room, Hannah approached me with a wide smile. "What? Are you gonna brag on how you answered Mrs. Grendel's question?" "No." She said. "Then what?" "You should be more open minded about the color white. I bet you were thinking about it too, before Mrs. Grendel asked that question. Right?" I just stared at her with astonishment. "Why should I be open minded about such a blank color?" "Because it helps your imagination flow." Hannah reached into her backpack and handed me two sketchbooks. "Take them. Look at mine and look at what I could do on blank white paper. Then take the other one, and try do something on your own. I reluctantly took the sketchbooks. The rest of the day, I flipped through Hannah's sketchbook, intrigued that there was no white on each page. There were variety of colors, no spot left unmarked. Then when I got home, I got all of my colored pencils, and started to mark on the first, blank white page in my sketchbook. My whole perspective changed after I colored the whole first page. My first blank canvas, unmarked and untouched, was now a beautiful work of art. A blank canvas is the start of imagination, that ends with true beauty.
