Journey

Journey

A Poem by Steven Hicks

Atop an overlooking hill there stood

A lone figure, hidden behind cloaked hood

Weary from travels from afar

Eyes trace the top, of the rising morning star

Sits and watches, changing colors of the sky

Stares on in awe as birds begin to fly

Reason for his journey returns to mind

Searching for another companion of his kind

Instructed to come here by an omnipresent voice

He followed because of mystery more than choice

Looking out across the baren plain

Remnants of previous existence in vain

Ghostly figures of a fallen race begin to play

Interrupted horribly, he watches their dieing day

After the chaos he sares on to see

A sole figure stand and turn to flee

Compelled to help, he follows in pursuit

Running through the plain, where chaos dressed its suit

The phantom runs farther and farther away

Despite his calls asking it stay

Day turns to night and night begins to fade

Chasing blindly still, after this phantom maid

Stumbles upon loose ground, falling to his face

Raising to his feet he sees a foreign race

Frightened he turns to run away

But a peaceful voice begs he stay

Could this be what he was called to find

Thoughts of being welcomed home fill his mind

He turned to face them and began to see

They were runners like him, only set free

Comforted and at peace he decided to remain

Once again at home and loved, free from the world's pain
