Why do we compete? I understand that there was once a time when the food went to the swiftest, the strongest or the smartest. But when do we get beyond that? Survival no longer depends on being any of those things. When do we stop feeling the need to be better than him, or them ... or be in the tribe that's better than his tribe, or hers? What is gained?
Good questions :) I think it's about confirmation and recognition of our efforts, contributions, work and pride in what we do.. spelling bees, getting a report submitted on time and without errors, a quadruple spin with a perfect landing. I don't think it's all about "look at how great I am" as much as the joy in accomplishment and contribution.
I honestly think it is something buried deep in our DNA...an us and them need. We build walls to keep them out but what really becomes of us? Who are we really, I honestly don't know. Chimp hierarchies are not a strict “pecking order”, but are complex, fluid, ... and I think we still carry that "mentality" around with us, an innate need to be on top of the pile.
good question Swine Guy! makes me think of introverts and extroverts ... one difference (in general) being that extroverts tend to be challenged outside themselves ... they have a lot of people they call friends and are energized in crowds ... while introverts are challenged within themselves, have only a few close relationships with people they call friend (all others are acquaintances) ...are drained in a crowd and refreshed in solitude ... neither one better or worse ... just differences ... BUT... researchers agree that extroverts make up 50-74% of the population ... maybe if we get rid of them those left (introverts) would naturally leave one another alone ... :))))) what do you think?
