Collateral

Collateral

A Poem by Creepy Swine Guy

Sometimes we laugh just to stem the saline flow,

to slow the throbbing of the grim, relentless ache.

If I make you laugh, consider it collateral benefit.

Take this benefit at distance, come no nearer.

Proximity will only bring the damage into sharper focus.

I am not who you think I am and, I never can be.

No potential, no fixing. I am simply … irreparable.

This is heavy. The first line perfectly sets the mood and theme and the masks are a poignant representation of the truth in the words. Expertly worded. Sets an ache in the heart of the reader. Well done.

This is a unique use of the word collateral- imagine a collateral benefit! But like all good things there is always a price- the universe demands balance I suppose. The ending of the poem is a strong statement and reminds me of the tears of a clown.
