Character Concept: The Demoness' Forkman

Character Concept: The Demoness' Forkman

A Story by A Modern Hippy

Amaral, The Demoness’ Forkman:
    *Human. Male. 33yo.
*6’6. Solid build. Angular face. Blonde hair bleached white by sun. Green eyes. Heavily tanned. Corded arms just a little too long.
*Loyal. Tough. Pitchfork possessed by Hydea, a demon of Carnage that is in love with him. His spirit is a gateway to many other worlds, whose inhabitants value him for various reasons and protect him.
*Totally human. Brutally honest. Simpleminded; not stupid or dim, but plainly straightforward and practical.
    *Possessed pitchfork.
*He is trying to find some way to free Hydea so she can return to her own world; naturally unaware that she doesn’t want to go.
*Straightforward, brutally honest, completely devoted to his friends and cheerfully taciturn to everyone else. Caring and considerate towards everyone and everything, he has a habit of making friends out of enemies, totally indiscriminately; much to the chagrin of his besotted demon.
[Backstory: Amaral had always been able to see the denizens of other dimensions and spaces. For him the differences between worlds were far less than for others, and this attribute mixed with his easygoing personality and loyal nature made him an open door through which those with the power could pass, something that never bothered him as much as it bothered those around him.
Growing up in a capitol was difficult for him due to the internal conflict brought about by the mutual dislike between his human and inhuman visitors, so at fifteen he moved off into the country to become a farmer taking his only possession at the time, an aged pitchfork given to him by a merchant in return for helping move merchandise.
Having found a place he liked, he built a house, cultivated some land, and prepared to spend the rest of his years providing food for the nearby cities and towns of the innumerable worlds that he connected to, a calling that he fitted only too well.
Then, eighteen years after he had left the city and retreated to the country, he found a demon.
While clearing some land for a crop of new plants, he encountered a large boulder with the message ‘Do Not Move. Here Lies A Vessel Of Carnage, Caged And Bound For Abandoning The Ideals Of Her Liege.’ Though he understood the concept of carnage perhaps better than most any creature alive, his soft heart was not able to ignore the pain of a caged being, and so he set about attempting to shift the stone. In doing so he broke the gem that was the vessel and released Hydea, a Carnage type lower demon of his world.
Because of her extended imprisonment Hydea was very weak, and so Amaral took it upon himself to nurse her. This took an extensive amount of time, during which he and Hydea had to fight off numerous emissaries of her old master who had been sent to put her back.
His kindness and respect for her as an individual creature was new to Hydea, who was accustomed to being hated, and she fell in love with him. Sensing a darkness in him, she observed him closely using her Carnage and saw that he bore an immense internal wound, one so great that it nearly killed her to feel it and of which he seemed to be totally unaware; he was lonely.
And so, when his pitchfork was broken while defending her from her old master, she bound herself to the broken tool in order to protect him and created a Pact with Amaral that broke the one that had kept her bound to the stone.
Believing that all creatures should be free, Amaral was horrified at what he saw as imprisoning a creature he had rescued and, leaving his farm for the first time in nearly two decades, set out to find a way to break the ‘chains’ that bound Hydea to him, unaware of her desire to stay by his side].

Author's Note

A Modern Hippy
This character was brought about by a musing on the concept of an 'impossible love', ie a love that wasn't in any way forbidden, but was conceptually difficult.
I picked a character who was strong, but who was so self reliant that the 'need' for another being, the dependance of 'love', was an alien idea, and put them in a situation where they were stuck with a second character who has decided to devote everything to them. The interplay between Amaral and the demoness has a lot of open ground to be explored, as does their attitudes towards the other's values, strengths, and methods of dealing with problems.
