Love Survived the Marines

A Story by Tessah
"

She played with fire and nearly got herself killed, now nuclear weapons have been stolen and she keeps having to work with a guy who she hate. Can she help save the world from a full Cold War II?

"
I run along the beach with my Australian shepherd when a man crashes into me, knocking me down. "Ah, jeez, watch where you run!" I say as I stand up and brush the sand off my butt while Kitty barks at the guy. "Sorry, I was focused on training."
"For what? Kit!" I say as I help him to his feet and Kitty stops barking. "Marines, I work there and I got kicked off my old team so I'm trying to get back on."
"Huh, I used to work there as well." He looks at me closely and I can see the bell in his head go off. "Are you Sargent Pierce?"
"Former Sargent Pierce, I got early retirement after one of my men turned on us. I was the only one to make it out and the captain thought that I was working with the guy but turned him in."
"So I heard, but did you really?"
"No, I had handpicked all my men, and I thought that the man who turned on the team, that he liked me. But it was a rouse and I got my team killed over one mistake. After I found the guy, I tracked him down and shot him in the head like he almost did to me."
"Yeah, you were a legend to me and my partner." By now the clouds had vanished and the sun was coming out. "I've got to go." I say quickly, trying not to notice that his eyes were so brown they were almost black with gold and green flecks. "Yeah, I'll see you around then?"
 "Sure,"
"Carson, Logan Carson." He says holding out his hand to me. "Laura Pierce. It was fun crashing into you." He nods as we shake and I run off with Kitty alongside me, still feeling Street's perfect eyes on my back. I shake my head at the thought and run faster.

"Yo, Carson!" I look up at Gus as he stands over me. "I'm sorry, what did you say?" He looks at me and I shrug. "What?"
"What is on your mind today dude, you've been slack since you got here. What the heck?"
"Nothing, I just met this one girl at the beach the day and, there are no words for what she looked like."
 "What's her name?"
 "Laura Pierce."
"Wait, the Laura Pierce. As in former Sargent Pierce who's team got killed by one of their own?" I nod and he laughs. "Wow, you're a goner."

A couple weeks after I met Carson, my phone rings and I stop the music and punching before answering it. "Hello?"
"Hey this is Laura Pierce, right?" A man says on the other end. "Yes. Who am I talking to right now and how did you get this number?"
"Its Logan Carson, the guy that ran into you at the beach the other day."
"Oh, hey." He laughs slightly and I smile. "So I was wondering if you wanted to come down the balcony and join me on the beach here."
 "What?"
"Look down." I look off the end of the railing to find Carson standing near the balcony. I hang up and look at him. "What are you doing?" I call down. "Saving you from an over work-out." I roll my eyes and he climbs up the palm tree before jumping onto the balcony. "What did you do that for?"
"I guess I did it because I can't stop thinking about you." I blush and he smiles, but I clear my head and force the blush to fade. "You should stop thinking about me. I'm not fun to be around." I say as I continue punching the old bag and Carson holds it from the other side. "And what makes you say that?"
 "Everything in the universe."
"Not me." I laugh slightly and hit harder, tossing in a few round house kicks to the bag. "Hey, stop for a minute." Street grabs my fists and I swing at him instead. "What if you and I do a round. I beat you, you have to go on a date. You beat me, you get to pick where we go."
"So either way you get to take me on a date?"
"Pretty much." I roll my eyes but still shake his hand, sealing the deal. "Awesome." We circle each other on the mat and he strikes first, aiming for my head, dumb move. I quickly grab his arm and use it to flip around and knock him down. He grunts as I pin him down on his stomach. "Give up?"
"Not quite." He kicks and I fall off, but come at him again. Both of us fall to the floor again and I get pinned down instead, Carson hovering above me. "You know, you're even more beautiful close up." I try not to smile, and he laughs, giving me an opportunity to pin him down. But he surprises me by suddenly reaching up and kissing me. I sigh and let him over-power me for a minute as we kiss. 'No, no stop!' The small voice shouts and screams at me and by habit I pull away. "Did I do something wrong?"
"No, it wasn't you." I say as he lets me stand up and I walk over to my bag and pack my gloves and phone. "What was it then?"
 "Nothing,"
"Then kiss me again." I sigh and feel Carson's eyes watching me again, his perfect, beautiful eye- no stop! You're loosing it! "I can't." I don't know why, but the words hurt more than I'd thought. "Why?"
"I just, Halyard, the man on my team who turned, he and I were dating when he did it and I-I never forgave myself for being so blind to his actions. The night before, he asked me to leave the team and I thought that it was odd, and said that I had worked hard to get to where I was and he seemed to erupt. I didn't think much about it, until he held us at gun point and then it all made sense. He had wanted me to get off the team so he wouldn't shoot me, but when I didn't, I guess it made him mad and he tried to kill me as well. But he missed and it gave me the chance to overthrow him."
"Is that why you think that I would do the same thing?"
"Yes, no. I don't know. Maybe."
"All I'm asking right now is one chance, please?" I turn and look at him. "You just never give up do you?"
"Only if the girl is extremely hot." I blush and he continues looking at me. "Well?"
"Fine, but only one date." He grins and we kiss again, but I'm surprised that I find myself bummed that it doesn't last longer. "I'll meet you at the cafe at the beach tonight."
"Sounds perfect." I say and he grins, flipping over the railing and scaling down the tree to the sandy ground. I sigh and head out to my motorcycle and head back to my apartment to shower and get ready, changing into a pair of dark denim jeggings and a military tank top with a pair of leather strap heels. I smile at myself and walk out to my my motorcycle before roaring out on to the road running along the beach to the cafe, finding
