crisisA Story by l'ange de mort Dr Johan rubbed his bleary eyes. He set his mug on the counter top and waited for another refill of coffee. He had been working for 23 hours straight. There was a mysterious virus going around. One that targeted the young with AIDS or diabetes. They had yet to find a cure. The coffee dripped slowly, like glucose in a drip. Drip… drop… drip… drop… the hypnotic dripping almost lulled him to sleep. “Dr P. Johan to the OT now. Dr P. Johan to the OT now.” the voice of the nurse scratched across the speakers. “Normal sterilizing procedures not needed.” Dr Johan snapped awake, and immediately put on a coat. He rushed towards the OT, wondering what it was this time. When he got to the OT, a nurse was waiting impatiently at the doors. “Patient checked. His blood is diabetes and AIDS positive. We think it is the same virus that is going around. His liver is burning itself up.” She handed Dr Johan a sheet of paper. As Dr Johan’s electric-blue eyes scanned the document, the nurse went on. “The patient is on the brink of life and death. We suggest…” but before she could finish, Dr Johan had barged into the OT. The nurse shrugged and left. Dr Johan got a good look at the patient. His stomach had distended, his eyes rolled in the back of his head. A small trickle of saliva was going down his cheek. Dr Johan had never seen a patient this badly infected. Blood splattered everywhere as the patient thrashed about. ‘He’s having fits,’ Dr Johan thought, ‘Poor guy.’ Dr Johan knew that the virus in him was trying to reach a new host. Dr Johan plunged his hands into the machine and it whirred to life. Dr Johan smiled as the machine gave a satisfying hum. He tried to save the patient, but it failed. The cardiogram blanked. His patient was dead. Still, Dr Johan did not want the patient to be dumped down the chute just yet. He moved the mechanical incisors to cut the patient’s distended stomach. It opened at the slightest touch of the incisors. Blood spurted everywhere. Everyone knew to stay away. They knew that the virus was still alive. The patient’s liver was visible at the fist cut. Cutting a hole big enough to get the swollen liver out, Dr Johan changed the direction of the incisors so deftly that they became clips. Dr Johan smiled as he poked through the inflamed organ and pulled it out. “This liver would provide many test samples. We can cure the disease. It is now just a matter of time.” He said to everyone in the OT. However, Dr Johan didn’t know that his own liver was burning itself up, too. © 2010 l'ange de mortReviews
