AFTER THE CONCERT.

AFTER THE CONCERT.

A Poem by Terry Collett
"

A YOUNG MAN AND HIS MEETING THE MJQ

"

After the concert you went

around the back and there

was the bus with John Lewis

talking to some guy by the

door and having got by them

you climbed aboard the bus

and saw the other members

of the MJQ and having made

your way towards them Percy

Heath gave you a big smile and

you said who you were and he

gave you the low down on his

double bass and signed your

programme and so did Connie

Kay although he didn’t have a

lot to say and then there was

Milt Jackson who was sitting

in a side seat a guy you wanted

to meet who had played with

most of the jazz greats years

before and he said a few words

and signed with a quick squiggle

and then as you departed the bus

John Lewis all gentlemanly and

soft spoken signed the programme

too and then you were off back

home to play the record of the

MHQ you’d bought carrying your

images of the MJQ guys in your

memory that you’d caught.
