DUNNE'S LOVE.A Poem by Terry CollettA MAID AND HER LOVE FOR HER MISTRESS IN 1920S.Dora Dunne the maid enters Miss Hazel’s room closes the Door looks around the walls And sniffs the air the staleness Of sleep and scent still there so She opens wide a window lets In the morning breeze Miss Hazel Is out and the room is silent as She goes to make the bed pulling Up the lower sheet pumping up The pillows and she picks off a Strand of hair and twiddles it Between fingers and brings it Up to her eyes then brings it to Her lips and kisses it and then Places it into her apron pocket For safe keeping to put amongst Her collection of bits and pieces Tucked in her small chest of Drawers she pulls up the top Sheet, blankets, and eiderdown And smoothes them down with Her hands then stands back looking Down at the bed and despite Miss Hazel’s constant nagging and Moaning and coldish stares she Still feels oddly happier when She’s there than when she isn’t And when she helps her dress in The mornings as she had that cold Morning she feels the urge to put Her arms about her waist and kiss Her neck and it is only by a strong Will to resist that she doesn’t and Even now going to the window and Peering out at the fields and trees She knows she loves and will do Whatever she can to keep her place And love obey and hope to please. © 2010 Terry Collett |
