HAZEL & DUNNE.

HAZEL & DUNNE.

A Poem by Terry Collett
"

A LADY AND THE MAID.

"

Hazel touches her
Hair pushes it in
Place tries to get it

Just right scanning the
Mirror from each of
The angles to see

How each view seems no
Hair out of place but
Still not quite as she

Wants it not just as
She thinks it should be
And what if Dunne comes

In with her brown eyes
And her fidgety
Fingers the maid

Has no idea how
It ought to be and
Always attempts to

Brush it hard in a
Different place and
Combs it so roughly

To bring tears to eyes
And curse of the tongue
Then stands there open

Mouthed because Hazel
Has scolded her oh
To be without her

Oh to be able
To say go Dunne go
Do this or that go

Elsewhere but Father
Insists the girl stays
Wants her about the

House he likes the way
She obeys and waits
On table and makes

The beds and pours the
Coffee and tea but
Hazel pats her hair

In place and eyes her
Lips and underwear
And listens for the

Familiar steps
On stair and floor and
The hand opening

The door the eyes of
Dunne searching her up
And down taking in

Her hair and lips and
Face and underwear
And always that all

Too familiar
And searching cold stare.
