You remember Mother
Saying you’ve got a tongue
In your head so use it
But that was then before
The onslaught of dementia’s
Hold and the slow decline
Of words and thoughts
Connected to the world
Of sense and now she says
Who are you? and where am
I now? and I want to go home
When home is where she is
Or where’s Daddy? And you
Sitting beside her stroking
Her hand trying to take weird
Conversation beyond the
Frontier of odd remarks and
Gibberish words you sadly
Realize that this is it this is
The way it’s gone and her
Tongue and mind have now
Mutinied against your mother’s
Self and sense and there seems
No rhyme or reason no way for
All her love for you to recompense.
