HANGING PICTURES.A Poem by Terry CollettA WOMAN ASKED HNERY TO HANG A PICTURE FOR HER.Miss Honeysup moved into The upstairs apartment And she made a lot of noise And had her music up loud And screamed at the guy she Had there sometimes, some Big hunk who skulked about Smoking a cigar. One morning At seven o clock, she rang Henry’s Doorbell persistently until he Opened it in his vest and shorts. What so important you have to Get me outta bed and away from My dreams of Monroe and me? He said, staring at Miss Honeysup, Taking in her hair and breasts and Her nicely set eyes. I need a picture Hanging on the wall. But I can’t do it, I’ve just banged my thumb and I think It’s bruised and Joey’s gone off for a Few days and well I thought maybe You could hang it for me, she said, Holding a hammer in her small hand, Looking at Henry’s vest and shorts And the unkempt hair and rough face. Sure, he said, give a few minutes to Slip into some clothes and I’ll be there. Thank you, she said and turned and Walked up the stairs and Henry watched And saw her cute a*s sway from side To side and her legs rise and fall and He sighed and went in and closed the Door and his wife bellowed from the Bedroom, who was that? Oh, just one Of those Witnesses with their bible and Books and magazines and wanting me To find God. What’d tell them? She asked. Said I looked for him, but couldn’t find Him no place, Henry bellowed back, Putting on his shirt and pants, thinking Of Miss Honeysup, wondering how far Her legs went up and how and why this Joey guy could leave behind such a dame With such beautiful legs, face and frame And hoping he’d not be back for a few Weeks or not at all, hoping he could do More for her than hang pictures on a wall. © 2010 Terry Collett |
