Simone picks up the telephone.
Hello, is that you Hank? It’s me,
Simone. I just wanted to thank
You for the flowers and the sweet
Message tucked inside, they are

Beautiful and my favourite flowers.
How did you know, Hank, eh? You
Are so good to me, you know that.
Hey, Simone, get off the darn phone,
Joey calls. Never mind him, Hank,

He’s just a mister nobody, as I was
Saying, those flowers came as a big
Surprise, the boy came to the door
With this big bouquet and I almost
Swooned, luckily, Joey was out and

I was able to read the message and
Put the flowers in a vase all neat and
Nice before he got home. What? Joey?
I told him they were from my mother
In Kansas a kind of early birthday

Present because she knows I like
Flowers. Hey, Simone will you get
Off the darn phone, Joey bellows.
Sorry about that, Hank must go,
But thanks, and yes, tomorrow on

42nd Street and I will be wearing
That dress you like and the scent
You bought me and Oh, Hank, you
Are so naughty, look must go before
The schmuck comes in, yes, love you

Too, bye bye. Simone puts down the
Telephone and goes into the kitchen
Where Joey is at the table drinking.
Who you talking to? Mother asked
If I got the flowers. It took you that

Long to tell her? She loves to talk.
Huh. Dames and their talking. If
You had a dynamo attached to your
Jaw, you could light up New York.
Simone smiles and thinks of Hank

And love and flowers and sex and
Jazz and his kisses on her neck and
Thighs and here and there and Joey
Just sits there gazing and drinking
And smoking without concern or care.
