![]() Bill and Task Complete 1966.A Poem by Terry CollettHe stood still, staring down at the bath, his shirt sleeves rolled up, hands by his sides, water dripping onto the floor from fingers. He stood gazing at the woman in the bath under the water, her eyes open, her mouth slightly ajar. He stood upright, shook his hands to remove water, and breathed in deeply. He walked to a small cupboard and took out towels and laid them on the damp floor to soak up the water. He wiped the towels over the floor until all the water had soaked into the towels. He picked up the towels and threw them in the bag. He gazed at the woman again, her hair seemed to float about the head, but less so now. He guessed she had been good looking, not that he liked women in that way, he preferred men. The only woman he ever loved was his mother, and maybe she was the only one who understood him. He went into the bedroom and removed his damp shirt and trousers and put on a dried shirt and trousers. He stuffed his damp clothes in the bag with the towels and put the bag in the old suitcase. After spending a little time going around ensuring all was normal, he looked at the bath again. The woman lay there still. The water was now motionless. His task done, he pickled up the suitcase and left the apartment. No one was around at that early hour, little or no traffic passed on the street. He put the suitcase in the boot of his car and looked once about him, got in the car and drove off slowly and quietly, and disappeared from the street, his task give by the Agency, complete. © 2025 Terry Collett |
