Bill and Secrets 2023

Bill and Secrets 2023

A Poem by Terry Collett

The ex-cop pissed Bill off
with his old plod nonsense,
how he solved all those crimes,
him just a beat bobby
for most of his career.

Bill had seen real murders,
and seen them covered up,
even did a few himself
to look like suicides
or looked like accidents.

The brain-dead ex-lawyer
sat at breakfast table
sniggering or silent
at the ex-cops patter,
and he sat next to Bill
slurping his cup of tea
or nibbling burnt toast.

Bill hated mealtimes
listening to the crap,
eating the prepared meals
provided by the Lodge.

The empty vacant chair
on his left once belonged
to a farmer, now dead,
as he was pretty much
brain-wise before his death.

Once breakfast was over
Bill returned to his room
and lit a cigarette.

The Agency always kept
secrets, and Bill knew them,
and kept them locked away
in rooms inside his head,
along with those now dead.
