Eddie a Watcher 1948.

Eddie a Watcher 1948.

A Poem by Terry Collett

The man stood on the platform of the underground station, his finger moving along the underground map on the wall. Eddie kept his distance, kept his eye on the man, aware of others around him, trying to mix in with the crowd, not stand out. The man seemed lost, gazed around him, returned to the map, his finger moving along a line. The sound of an approaching train, the whoosh of air entered the platform, the man turned around and walked towards the train, standing back as disembarking passengers went past him. Eddie stood back, watched the man, moved closer, his eyes attached to the man’s back. The man boarded the train, Eddie boarded a bit further along, searched for the man amongst the crowds. The train moved on, Eddie’s eyes scanned the faces, couldn’t find the man, his eyes searched the departing platform, no one left behind, the man must be on the train someplace. Then there he was along a bit further, moving with the movement of the train, a woman near him, eyeing him, talking. Eddie looked and mentally noted, face and hat and clothes. Eddie watched as if not looking, as if one of the crowd. The train moved on through the darkness, the two moved with the movement of the train, talking one again.
