Benny Visiting Jenny 1956.

Benny Visiting Jenny 1956.

A Poem by Terry Collett

Jenny wasn’t home,

she was out shopping

for her grandmother,

so her grandmother said

to come in and wait.

I sat on a settee

in her sitting room

while she went off

to sort the washing.

The room was full of photographs

and small statues of animals.

The canary was in its cage

making noise.

Jenny and I were going

to Jail park to ride

the swings and slide;

we wanted to go swimming,

but her grandmother

didn’t like Jenny to go swimming

with others in skimpy swimwear.

I hoped Jenny wasn’t

going to be long,

I was already bored

and so went to the canary

and spoke to him.

How’s your belly

off for spots?

I said.

The canary looked at me

with its head to one side,

puzzled. It made chirpy noises

in reply to my words.

It funny world of birds.
