Joe's Moan.

Joe's Moan.

A Poem by Terry Collett

Life’s a drag;

like a book

you hope will

get better,

but of course

it doesn’t.

You’re brain-washed

to expect

that it will.

It’s the thought

of dying

that makes us

cling to life.

I recall

that old dear

who feared death

so much she

clung to life

with her thin

aged fingers.

Death grab her

one evening

while she slept.

The needle

or the pills

or the booze

can’t help you

in the end

I’ve tried them

and survived

and await

the ending.

Joe they say

you could have

been a good

contender,

but they lied

as most do.

I don’t know

if there’s life

after death.

Some think so,

some do not.

Have to see

once death comes

what follows.

I sup my

warmed up beer

and wait here.

Terry,
I often wonder what life would be like as a rich traveler, the world at my feet... Could I say at the end, "I HAVE LIVED!" any more than a dedicated farmer digging around the same third generation farm his whole life? What about a teacher with thirty years of kids out there? I guess all we can really do is find the exit with the fewest regrets. Charles Bukowski sure had a lot to say about his life, but I'm glad I'm not him. I pity those caged beasts locked away in their New York third floor flats, never seen a wild tree grown from seed.

This seems to be the lot of much of humanity. Life's a drag, so just wait for the end. But if we are open to the possibility that there is more to it than that, we might be surprised.

The author exhibits an outstanding mastery of language, skillfully merging narrative techniques with deep thematic exploration. The integration of symbolism and imagery not only enriches the story but also encourages readers to explore its underlying meanings. The pacing is finely tuned, creating a narrative that builds tension effectively, while the character development remains complex and convincing.
