NEAR SOME HOW 1962

NEAR SOME HOW 1962

A Poem by Terry Collett
"

TWO BOYS AND A GIRL AT SCHOOL ON A SCHOOL BUS 1962

"

Benny never saw Yiska
waiting for him
at the school gates
before the bus left

she usually was
there waiting
to talk or kiss
or such before

his bus went
but she wasn't there
and as he sits
by the window

of the bus
he thinks of her
and how his day
is made or not

by her and her
being there
he'd seen her
at midday

but where had
she gone after school
you know what
Trevor says

we almost won
that game lunch time
and if you'd played
with us

instead of going off
with the bint
we'd have won
what's so special

about her?
he says
I’m no ball player
Benny says

I like her
she makes my day
o my God
you've got it bad

bugger if I’d let a bint
get me in such a state
Trevor says
that's how it is

Benny says
looking at
the passing view
of fields and trees

and houses
and birds in flight
and the bus radio
playing out some

music much too loud
he wishes it was Yiska
beside him now
and not the boy

yakking it off
beside him
her leg next to his
her body squashing close

as the bus goes on
she's just a girl
nothing more
Trevor says

how can you want her
rather than a kick around
with ball with mates?
Benny wishes it was

her speaking now
not the yakking bore
beside him now
he closes his eyes

and pretends
she's there
quite near
some how.
