PAST CARING 1971

PAST CARING 1971

A Poem by Terry Collett
"

A GIRL IN A LOCKED WARD IN 1971 WITH SEVERE DEPRESSION.

"

I see you,
Yiska,
at the wide window

of the locked ward,
staring out
like a distraught captain

at the bridge
of a sinking ship,
clutching at the radiator

like the captain
at the wheel,
her memories

abandoning
the sinking ship,
plunging

into the icy waters
of expansive
indifference.

I see you,
Yiska,
dressed

in that scanty nightie,
your hair in a mess,
eyes staring,

I speak to you,
but you
seem past caring.
