SCHOOLBOY HEART 1962

SCHOOLBOY HEART 1962

A Poem by Terry Collett
"

A BOY AND GIRL AT HIGH SCHOOL RECESS IN 1962

"

We meet by the fence
you and I

lunchtime recess
high school
sports field

a mixture
of boys and girls
and ball games
and skip ropes
and sitting talking groups

and you say
my mother
knows nothing of me
knows nothing
of what makes me tick
of what makes me
feel as I do
how I feel about you

I notice Trevor
is doing well
with the ball
in the ball game
head down
he goes for the goal

all I want
you say
is to be with you
to be close
grab a kiss or hold
when no one's looking

I see Trevor's
fucked it up
and fouled a player
and has got a booking

just to be with you
here and now
you say

I feel your hand
squeezing mine
your soft flesh
squeezing my own

kiss him Yiska
someone calls
from afar

but you don't
you just blush
look away
hand releasing
from hand

I notice
your perfume
invading me
stirring me up

but too late
a bell rings for the end
of recess
and you depart
taking with you
a small part
of my schoolboy heart.

Very touching piece. I think we can all think of a time in out life where this was exactly how we felt.
