DATE AT THE FLICKS 1960A Poem by Terry CollettA BOY AND GIRL AND THEIR DATE AT THE FLICKS 1960It was Saturday and I managed to have money for the matinee at the flicks I asked Fay if she wanted to come along o best not she said if Daddy knew he'd be mad he says films are the Devil's voice and God's children ought not be tempted I see I said what about afterwards can I see you then? she looked past me (down Meadow Row) where can I see you? she asked Daddy's not that keen on me seeing you why's that? I asked you're not Catholic and he said that will be troublesome in later years she looked at me I like you and want to see you but where? she said meet me by the greengrocers off Arch Street I said then we can decide where to go I don't know she said that's near the bomb site and there are tramps there sometimes and they frighten me ok meet me by Neptune's Fish Shop and we can go from there I said ok she said what time? about 11.30am? I said ok she said she looked at me her eyes were blue and sad and her fair hair sucked the sunlight I got to go or I'll miss the start of the matinee I said maybe I could go with you now she said Daddy won't know and I won't tell him unless he asks me outright then of course I can't lie as a good Catholic girl I'd have to tell him the truth ok I said but we must go now or we'll be too late she nodded her head and we set off for our childhood date. © 2015 Terry Collett |
