THE SPIDER DAMEA Poem by Terry CollettA POST MAN A ND THE DAME AND HER SPIDERSJohnny remembers her that dame from uptown whose husband was away so much and he (the postal guy) would see her almost daily coming to her door for the mail or parcel and she'd stand there sometimes in a nightie other times dressed and smart but one day she said come in a minute will you I need you to do something for me ok Johnny said dropping his mailbag by the door (which she closed) and followed her into the apartment what can I do for you? he asked I think there's big spider under my bed and I'm petrified of them do you think you could find it for me? Johnny looked at her she was wearing an almost see through nightie and shoes sure he said I'll have a look under the bed so he got down on his knees and looked can't see much under here have you a torch? I'll go see she said he stared into the semi-dark beneath the bed sensing a strong whiff of scent I found this she said she handed him a small torch and he turned it on and looked under the bed there was dust and a glass and a pair of underwear and a sock (her husband's he guessed) but no spider yet wait there it was a big fat one by the sock he grabbed at it and caught it in his fist got it he said o goodie she said you don't know how grateful I am she said he got out from beneath the bed and taking the clutched spider to the window he let it go o thank you s he said no problem he said anytime and went to leave and she said have you time for a drink? sure why not he replied and so he did Johnny smiles looking back at that dame and her spider knowing she had plenty more to find at a later date but he didn't mind. © 2015 Terry Collett |
