MILKA WATCHES 1964

MILKA WATCHES 1964

A Poem by Terry Collett
"

A GIRL WATCHES AS HER BOYFRIEND AND HER BROTHERS PRACTICE JUDO IN 1964

"

Milka watches Benny
in the farmhouse field
practice judo
with her two brothers

she looks from her
bedroom window
through white
net curtains

sometimes it's karate
they practice
each one taking
on the other

with careful
blows or moves
she peers
as Benny moves

and her big brother
goes down
with a slight of hand
her other brother stares

standing back
thinking his next move
she bites her lower lip
fearing Benny’s fall

her big brother
gets to his feet all smiles
the other brother
moves in

and Benny
caught unawares
takes a fall
and Milka gasps

and heads turn
window wards
and she steps back
fearing to be seen

but they turn away
back to their judo
and she creeps back
to her bedroom window.
