BEFORE MORNING BREAK 1969

A BOY AND GIRL AT AN OLD FOLKS HOME IN 1969

I have only just finished
making Mr D's bed
in the old folks home
when Sophia's there
by the door
arms folded
her eyes searching me

it was close thing
yesterday night
she says

I look at her
wondering how
I got out of her place
with her parents
looking at me
in such a way
and I felt it
was close as close
as being caught
as being caught can be

I ask

she closes the door
of the room behind her

she shrugs
and moves close to me

of the old boys' beds?

Mr D comes in?

he not come up here
in the day
I talk with him
he say too far
to come
he stay downstairs
in day time

someone else comes?

then a bell rings

look must go
morning break
coffee or tea
in the staff room
if we're not there
they'll think something
and then
God's knows what

moving away
and so she goes
and I am hot.
