Prologue

Bright waves of moonlight played over the field where three dark figures were standing. A small fire crackled between them, lighting up their faces and making their shadows to stretch across the silvery-wet grass. Morning dew drops showered around them from the large oak tree above.

"Are you sure?" One of the women drew back her hood and looked up at the stars as if searching for a reply.

"Of course." One of the others spoke now, scribbling down the results of their ritual in a leather-bound book.

"The ritual didn't convince you, Amity? I thought it was pretty clear."

The woman called Amity narrowed her eyes and spoke in a low hiss. "This is no time for sarcasm. The message was very cryptic, unless you've figured it out Stella."

Stella glared back at her. "What if I have?"

"Then I expect to hear it."

The girl writing in the book looked up and watched, eyes full of amusement at her two young apprentices. "No. The message is not meant to be 'figured out'. It is already in its simplest form."

Amity and Stella both looked at their mentor. "What do you mean?" Amity said after a moments silence.

"I think it's best if you find that out foir yourselves."
