Night over the streets

The moon glowed silently over the streets. It was surprising how, despite the immediate brightness of itself, the light of that cold body did little to illuminate the world below. The light that flickered above the chilly asphalt, reflected off the window glass; this light was not of heaven but of an earthly nature. The streetlamps and headlights, all at once glaring and warm, did not as some people have been prone to think, turn night into day. The lights of the city were islands of color, pockets of illumination in a vast shroud of dark. Hundreds of towering buildings, their bright windows of the working-late seeming to be miniature versions of the sky above, seeming to be create their own constellations. There, the constellation Radisson; and there, some lesser one, Law Building Minor. People walking the streets- what sign are they? No sun signs here; in these hours of distraction, another zodiac must surely be in place. A new astrology, forgotten during the day, once more looked to in the late watches of the night. Nocturnal philosophies, governed by countless earthbound stars.
