Emily Elizabeth Dickinson

I step over the threshold.

It's like stepping back in time.

An eerie silence grips me.

It settles in my bones.

It cannot escape.

It will not leave.

Standing in Emily Dickinson's bedroom

is life-changing and inspirational.

The room smells of ink and paper.

A most marvelous smell.

The smell only

a true writer can detect-

no matter how faint.

I feel her very soul with me in the room.

Write...”I freeze.

Silence.

Write...” My heart races.

With trembling fingers,

I take out my notebook and pencil.

I sit at her desk and write

for five hours till my left hand feels numb.

I close my eyes.

When I open them,

I see Emily standing in the doorway.

I wrote... and she just smiles.
