car crashA Story by TeeMarie15my family got into a bad car crash- but my dad saved us!!December 8th, 2009 is a day that
myself and my family will never forget. It's the day we survived a car crash. The day started out as usual. We ate
breakfast, took the dogs out, and hung out. Then, we all bundled up and loaded
up in my mom's white Suburban. We were taking my mom's best friend's daughter
Angelina to the airport so she could fly home to Germany. We were riding along a bumpy, dirt
road. Suddenly, a car pulled out in front of us- even though we had the right
of way! We clipped their back right end, slid onto some black ice, and crashed
into a pine tree!! Both the air bags went off and I remember that right after
the crash, I bit my tongue and could taste blood. I then realized that my right
knee had smacked into the seat in front of me and that it hurt. My mom was
sitting in the passenger's seat and she was grabbing my dad's arm, calling his
name with panic in her voice:"Travis, Travis, TRAVIS!!!" Dad was very calm. He took out his
cell phone and called 911. He relayed to the dispatcher that we had got into a
bad car accident, what road we were on, and the kind of car it was. I think the
dispatcher had asked my dad if anyone had gotten out of the car because my dad
replied "No, I'm an EMT." I'm sure she was relieved to hear that my
dad was an EMT and had everything under control. It took forever for the volunteer
fire trucks and the ambulance to arrive. When I got out of the car to sit in
the pickup truck that belonged to one of the firemen, I noticed that it hurt to
put weight on my right leg. So, I ended up limping over to the truck and sat
inside, waiting for the ambulance. After the ambulance arrived, my dad
and another EMT walked over to me to check out my knee. It wasn't injured that
bad, just bruised. Then, I asked him if my dad told him he was an EMT. He
smiled and said yes and said that we were lucky that my dad was there and that
he had his EMT training and that I must be proud of him. He's right. I couldn't
be prouder of my dad! He's the best EMT in the world! Thanks to a family friend, Angelina
made her flight on time and after a pit stop for dinner, I was reunted with my
family. I remember giving my dad a letter I had written earlier in the car on
the way to the airport telling him how amazing he was and how proud I was of
him and thanking him for his actions earlier that day. My dad read my letter
and smiled and said he was just doing his job. Just another day in the life for
my dad. We kept the license plate which was
bangd up from the impact of smashing into the tree. Its a reminder to us of
survival and to never take any moment in life for granted. And we never do.
