Bitter as Dead

Bitter as Dead

A Poem by Ted Kniffen
"

Old haunts

"

BITTER AS DEAD

I have made you perfect.

You were not.

You haunt my dreams

in the blackest night.

I lay bitter,

as lifeless inside as your dim realm.

You are nothingness.

Pieced together bits

of protoplasm and ichors. An apparition

I beckon from the cavernous depths

of night, when sleep eludes me,

and I cast aside reason

and prudence to invoke your name,

Call you forth

from the blackness

My wraith

emerging from the murk

reeking of mossy walls,

mud, and dankness.

Pale amorphous shell

stepping from the shadows.

Slack-mouthed mustiness

stinking of smokey whisky

and the stale grave.

This is a deeply dark message! On one level, I think of it as people who are still breathing, but no longer in my life. On another level, I think of those who've passed on, but not missed very much. Either way, it seems these apparitions typically rise on moonless nights when I'm tossing & turning, unable to switch off my grinding mind. You captured that torment perfectly (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

people who caused you pain will always haunt you in some way or another they left a trace in your soul burned a brand in your eyes scarred your ears and tried to take the light they will haunt in the night cursing your skin feeding on your mind the apparition of pain realized in the night it seems endless as it falls upon moonlight for sun to break and times weary so comes a time respite short or long away from the traces the swirling shadows in the deep. I Love your writing so glad i get to see some more of your things such beautiful imagery.

sometimes it takes reflection of someone long gone to realize...she was not the perfect lover we had thought...we can be dazed and confused by beauty...
we can imagine someone to be more than she is...
and later, over that bottle...we destroy that perfection...could be truth coming out in the end..or just bitterness and casting blame...
