If I Could

If I Could

A Poem by David

           If I Could

If I could I would follow you back in time and to be sure

To shadow that bully that pushed you and skinned your knee

A good crack to his foul mouth for the sake of you, the cure

My sweet girl the sunlight in your smile was meant just for me

I would be there at that school play or maybe the soccer game

It would be my voice you would hear as I whispered in your ear

I am your will and confidence and shall forever be so near

Just a shadow in your hindsight but ever so watchful would be

Bring happiness and diminish the hurt would be the job for me

A back seat companion on your very first date, quiet I would remain

Unseen and unheard just to be your guardian and protector

Just in the event this young man would not refrain

Your college days bring challenge to me for sure but my will ever so strong

Yours to flirt with sex, liquor and drugs, Mine to keep you from harm and wrong

Always in the back of your mind that whisper would be

From my voice, your comfort all your life and my voice you’ll not flee

If I could I would reach into the night sky and harness the brightest star

I would bring it back to earth, shape and polish it to place it in your eyes

The warm summer rains are your tears, I hear all you cry and will never be far

For you were born just to be with me and me with you no others need apply
