The Daughter

The Daughter

A Poem by Kiara

Am I here to be your slave?

I thought I was your daughter

But all you do is scream and yell

When I do anything else but work.

If I’m trying to eat

Or trying to sleep

Or trying to talk to you

You yell and you yell

And all you do is tell me

What I should do.

You tell me I should be

Passing Algebra,

Which I’ve already flunked once,

And doing my homework

That I don’t understand

Because whenever I ask for help,

It is carelessly denied.

You say to do this and that

And wonder why I cry.

You wonder why I hide these razors

And hide this blood

And hide these cuts

And hide these scars,

When you should plainly see

That they are from you, not from me.
