A speech I wrote for my English class

"

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, I sat in the same seats as you.  Okay, maybe it wasn’t in a galaxy far, far away, but it does seem like it was a long time ago.  Welcome all faculty and staff, all friends, all families, and finally all graduates.  My name is Taylor Bigelow and I am here to bore you to death today.

I’d like to start off with a quote by Albus Dumbledore.  “Happiness can be found in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light.”  In the future, you will face darker times than you have faced in the past, but you can’t let yourself dwell on the pain and the sorrow.  There is some point of light somewhere, and it is up to you to find it and fight for it.  In hindsight, you will see that things aren’t as bad as they seem at the time.  You will see that our emotions lie to us.

Not only emotions lie to us, but so do people"as you certainly understand.  A difficult part of life is finding those people that don’t lie, a skill that we can use out in the real world as well as in high school.

One thing that doesn’t lie to us is music.  Music comforts us when we are sad and is there to party with us when we’re happy.  Growing up, I’m sure that some of your role models were musicians.  One of my role models is Jack Barakat, the guitarist in a band called All Time Low.  This man never takes anything seriously and can make a joke out of anything.  One of my favorite quotes of his is “Sometimes you gotta look yourself in the mirror and say ‘You are the prettiest princess in all the land.’  I do it once a week.”

Guys, this applies to you, too.  Show them that you are a pretty princess"the prettiest in all the land, to be exact.  I could imagine very few people actually doing this, but one of those few people is Mr. Wright, whose markers are not the colors green or red.  They are the flavors lemon-lime and cherry pie.  Some other people that would do that are many of the kids in marching band.

Speaking of marching band, this group is not just a team.  We are a family, and our father is Mr. Marlow"who had to put up with all of our shenanigans since fifth grade.  The marching band has given me so many memories, such as fitting over seventy kids on one bus or Drew Graham trying to jump a fence and ripping his shorts.  Yeah, that was pretty funny.

Another time, the band kids wanted to “serenade” the deer when it got into the school.  It made perfect sense to them, but Papa Marlow didn’t think it was such a good idea.

In most graduation speeches, one would probably talk about their parents.  Instead, I would like to talk about my cats.

Anna is probably the most poorly named cat in existence.  Her full name is Anorexia, because she was extremely malnourished when she decided to show up outside of our house.  Now she’s “slightly” overweight and her belly moves from side to side when she runs.  She also likes to sleep in boxes that she really doesn’t fit in, but that’s okay with me.

Kiara is probably the most unintelligent cat I’ve ever had.  She’s fallen from the top of the staircase twice and still thinks it’s safe to lean over the edge of the stairs.  She’s also tried to jump through a glass window before, which probably didn’t raise her I.Q.  Aside from lacking any common sense or any other sense, Kiara is always there to glare at me when I’m feeling down.  She hates everyone, and sometimes she tries to eat my hair, but she hates me less than she hates everyone else.  If she was a person, she would be like me, always saying that I hate everyone and everything.

Thankfully, I have found someone that understands me almost as much as Kiara does.  Taya not only complains about hating everything with me, but also procrastinates with me.  Her taste in music is almost exactly the same as mine and she understands my sense of humor, which is a very rare occurrence.

One time someone else understood my sense of humor was in Mr. Thomas’s class.  I never spoke in that class and one day, he asked the class something along the lines of “If your dog got hit by a car, what would you do?”  Very quietly, I said “laugh” because it seemed funny.  Somehow, no one understood that this was a joke and tried to avoid me after that.  Mr. Thomas laughed though.

Mr. Thomas was one of the teachers that made me realize that the teachers don’t want us to fail, mainly because they don’t want us in their class again.  No one wants you to fail (unless they really don’t like you).  They see more potential in you than you probably see in yourself and you need to show them that you can live up to that potential.  Show them what you’re good enough.  Show them that you are the prettiest princess in all the land.

Thank you.
