Dante's and My Rattling DayA Poem by Michelle GraysonA little poem about my day out riding with my horse, Dante.Among scrub and rock and tufts of sage A girl and her horse would come of age. For when the sun was high up in the sky There was a rattler on the trail I did spy.
A rattling on the wind....
Slow Slow away, some other way Venom not wanted Now or any other day.
A rattling, have I sinned?....
The choice was not to be mine, For my horse had his own mind And stood his ground upon rock and sand I wished the tune was of some other band.
A rattling of warning, beware....
"Come now Dante, this is a sign." "Do not dawdle, leaving it is fine."
A rattling, it speaks. "Do you dare?"....
Shivers and trembles I grip the reigns tight. I shake my head no! "Dante, this isn’t right!"
A snort of challenge A kick into the air Me on Dante’s rump Forward we did jump.
Hooves came down upon that rattlers head With a loud squishy POP! It was very dead.
On the way back home I knew And I’ll share my secret with you.
My horse is far braver than I. © 2010 Michelle Grayson |
