Michael

Shame, I really didn’t want to dress in a tuxedo today. It was a rule; at Marisol’s if you don’t dress formally you get kicked out. I find that a stupid rule, but the manager comes from Italy. I sit down for a minute staring outside the large fancy window. Then, an old man dressed in all black came up to me, and sat down in front of me.

“Young man,” he said “we need to talk for a minute.” I looked confused for a second because I don’t even know him.

“Yes,” I said “who are you?”

“I’m no one,” the man replied “forget that I was ever here, but remember these words.” I nodded my head in agreement.

“Okay,” I said “what is it that you wanna talk about.” The old man cleared his throat.

“I’ve been walking around these streets,” The man replied “and I happened to see you one night with this girl.” He showed me a picture of Tae.

            “You mean Tae,” I asked

“Yes, her,” The man answered “I know her because a friend of mine dated her. She was with him one night, and then the next day my friend was missing. Tae was found minding her own business, and said she went out to dinner with him then went home.” My eyes went open, and don’t even know where this man was getting at.

“I knew Tae didn’t go home that night,” The man continued “I used to live next door from her, and I saw she never came home that night. Eventually, I saw her with this other man named Scott. Scott was my boss, and I had his phone number. I saw that he didn’t come to work at 8:00p.m. Since, he was a manager at a club, and I’m a janitor.” I felt a shiver up my spine for the thought of being a club janitor, and cleaning up vomit.

“I remember going home that night,” The man said “and finding Tae sneaking into house really late. I called in for my pay check, but Scott never picked up his phone. The next morning I saw him on the news dead.”

“Dead,” I said “how could that be?”

“What I’m saying is kid,” the man said “be careful around Tae. She is a very mysterious girl, and be very cautious people have been dead, or missing. I have been hearing reports of men dead or missing for many years.”

“But Tae is too nice,” I replied “I don’t think she has a great urge to kill anybody, or wipe them off the face of this earth.”  The old man stared at me blankly.

“You don’t know that for sure son,” The man continued “you don’t even know a thing about her do you boy? I’m sure you would know her childhood, or her family.” I thought for a second, and it was true I didn’t know a thing about Tae. All I knew is that she was beautiful, and likes ramen because she told me.

“Watch out son,” The man warned again “she can be dangerous. Remember the more you love them, the more their truth reveals. ” I watched the man walk off, and disappear out the restaurant doors. I felt my curiosity grow, and was that man right could Tae be the cause of those deaths? Then, I see Tae walk up to my table, and I almost forgot what I was thinking about. Tae’s presence fell over me again like a spell. She sat down in front of me with a smile, and I must say Tae looked dangerously hot. She had on a tight black mini dress, and her eyes seemed to sparkle more than I saw them last time.

“Hello, Michael,” She greeted “are you okay your face looks a little flushed.” I knew my face was red because I felt a little hot.

“Yes,” I replied “I’m okay.” I felt my stomach go into circles, and I think I might order something small.

“I’m sorry I went a little over the top,” Tae apologized “it was the only place I can think of.”

“No it’s okay,” I replied “I like fancy places, but I’m not really hungry now.”

“Neither am I,” Tae smiled “but it was nice to see you.” Suddenly, the words that the old man warned me about sliced back into my head.

“What was your childhood like,” I asked without thinking “I really don’t mean to pry.” Tae still looked at me with a smile.

“Michael, you are so cute,” Tae replied “you can ask anything about my childhood all you want. Don’t be afraid to ask me I won’t mind.” She began to tell me stories of her childhood of when she was a little girl that she owned a dog named Skippy. She also said her mom and dad always treated Skippy like he was her little brother. They always celebrated his birthday, and gave him Christmas presents. She also said she gave Skippy a new doggy toy every Easter.

I laughed at the funny stories, and was quiet when it came to sad ones. Like a time when Tae’s grandma died.

“Now that you know about me,” Tae said calmly “what about you?” She began to stroke my hand softly, and I felt tingles go up my arm. My cheeks felt like there were flames on them. I took a deep breath, and told her all of my childhood. She listened to every word like she was watching a movie.

Later, both of us got hungry, and decided to order cream puffs. Well, since that restaurant was expensive Tae and I split one. I bit into my half, and it tasted wonderful. Tae was laughing at me for some reason.

“Michael, you got cream on your cheek,” Tae giggled “here let me get that for you.” She took up a napkin, and then sat next to me. She softly dabbed the excess cream off my cheek, and looked at me with a smile. I felt my cheeks redden more, and I smiled back. I saw Tae’s face change like she was studying me.

“Michael,” she said “are you sure you’re not sick.” Her soft hand touched against my cheek, and then she slid it down to my chest. I felt more fire go to my face, and my hands go moist. Tae gave me one of those sneaky smiles.

“You feel a little too warm,” she replied as she went back to her seat “maybe you should go home and get some rest.” My throat closed up, and I was too stunned to speak.

“Um…,” I stuttered “no I’m not sick.” Tae gave off one of her silent laughs.

“Are you sure,” Tae asked “or is it something else.” I saw Tae’s face go into sneaky expression with that funny smile.

            “No,” I said “it’s nothing really…..I don’t think.”

“I know what it is,” Tae said teasingly “you’re not used to a girl being so close to you. Am I wrong?” Dang, she’s good how does she even know that? Back in high school I never really dated anyone.  I would have replied but instead I shrugged.

Tae and I stayed at the restaurant for another hour, when it came to the check things fired up a little.

“I’ll pay for the check,” Tae said glumly “I’m sure that’s what you want.” I looked at her oddly.

“No, I’ll pay,” I replied “It’s rude to have a lady pay for a meal it’s a guy’s job.” Tae’s eyes lit up and she gave off a smirk. I paid the check and walk outside with Tae. She turned to me with a bright smile.

“I had fun tonight,” Tae said “are you busy for New Year’s?”

“No,” I replied “I thought about spending it alone.” Tae eyes turned to sympathy and sadness.

“Please don’t,” she said “you can spend it with me.” She began to stroke my cheek, and look into my eyes with kindness. I felt more fire hit me in the face, but this time it was stronger.

“But, I don’t know where you live,” I managed to say

“Simple,” she said “it is that large expensive penthouse right next to the main street cinema.” I knew where that was I lived down the street from there.

“Okay,” I said managing to smile because Tae was still stroking my cheek. Tae leaned in closer to me, and her lips brushed my cheek.

“I’ll see you at six,” Tae whispered in my ear “at my place.” Suddenly, she gave me a quick kiss on the lips, and walked away. I think I almost fainted, but I wasn’t sure if I did. I walked to my truck, and drove home.
