Good to Goth Chapter 5A Chapter by Tator Of SuburbiaIt's finally out sorry for the delay
Breakfast was cruel and unusual torture, the girls her age stared at Maddison like she had just committed a crime just by sitting at the table. Then she went to Miss Bradley’s French class and made all of the girls plus Miss Bradley angry with her because she already knew how to speak French fluently. It seemed like no matter where she went the girls and Miss Bradley were angry with her.
Their afternoon break too place right after etiquette class, which Maddison left feeling like she had just made every girl in the room feel like a barbarian. Miss Bradley stopped her on her way to Mason’s room, “Maddison I need to see you in my office.”
“Yes Miss Bradley,” she mumbled and followed behind the teacher. Miss Bradley’s office was quite beautiful, it did not have the same ugly wallpaper that covered the rest of the school, it was a beautiful solid green color that reminded her of the fields that her mother and father used to take her to when she little.
“Now Maddison I am getting a lot of complaints from the other girls that you keep telling them they do everything wrong is that true?” she asked sitting in the oak wood desk.
“No Ma’am, I haven’t said anything to any of the girls, I swear,” Maddison replied a bit surprised that the girls would be so mean as to lie about her.
Unfortunately Miss Bradley did not seem to believe Maddison and began to stare her down like the truth would suddenly leap out of her. “But isn’t it true that you speak fluent French, and you are way ahead of the teacher in etiquette?” she asked, “So wouldn’t you be compelled to correct other girls as well?”
“No Ma’am. The only reason because I speak fluent French is because I am French, and my mother taught me etiquette for both France and England, But I would never tell someone they are doing everything wrong. My mother just didn’t feel the need to send me away for twelve years, she said she loved me too much.” she said .
Miss Bradley looked at Maddison as if she was trying to find something to make her be in trouble. Maddison looked at her pleadingly, “Miss Bradley please. I haven’t done anything wrong. I don’t know what a finishing school is like, so I am sorry if I know too much. I promise I won’t correct the teachers anymore and I’ll keep quiet in French unless you call on me. I’m really sorry I made the girls feel bad just by knowing so much of something. Please don’t punish me because my mother was a good teacher.” she begged. If her grandmother found out about all of this she would be furious, but not furious enough to take her away from this place.
Miss Bradley’s intense stare seemed to soften a little bit, and then she nodded. “Very well” she said, “ I guess the girls are just having a hard time adjusting. After all this is an odd time for us to take on new students. Maddison you are instructed participate in your classes without speaking unless you are spoken to understood.”
Maddison nodded and curtsied, “Yes Ma’am, “ she said politely.
“You may go,” Miss Bradley said quickly and sat at her desk again.
Maddison left the room quickly and ran up the stairs she knocked on Mason’s door but he didn’t answer. Worried she knocked again, but no one answered.
“I don’t know why you are knocking on that door no one lives in there,” said a blond girl behind Maddison, startling her as she jumped around.
“The butler my grandmother bought for me lives there.” she replied quietly looking down from the beautiful girl. Her hair was bright blonde and her eyes were a beautiful green. Her lips were full and made it look like she was pouting all the time, but at the moment the were pursed together as she sized Maddison up. “I have to go,” Maddison mumbled and reached for her door.
“Wait, you said you have a butler living here?” the girl said grabbing Maddison’s arm.
“Yes, his name is Mason. Now would you please let me go, your hurting me,” she said a bit meanly, but the girl’s hand was in a vice like grip around her wrist.
The girl finally let go after staring at Maddison suspiciously and walked off looking a bit flustered. Maddison sighed and walked into her room to find Mason lounging on her bed. “What are you doing in here?!” she squealed.
Mason laughed at Maddison’s reaction and got up, he was dressed much differently now that she looked at him. When she first met him he was in a tails coat and top hat. Today he wore a navy blue jacket with a white shirt underneath and black trousers and shoes. “ I have been busy running errands all day, I thought you would like to have a familiar face in your company,” he said jovially.
Maddison was speechless, Mason had not known her long but they acted like friends of a lifetime. “I was just startled that all. I expected you to be in your room or wondering the grounds,” she replied forcing her heart to normal speed which wasn’t easy considering how tight her corset happened to be.
“Well then why don’t we go for a stroll before Miss Bradley catches us in that same room,” Mason suggested joyfully extending his hand for Maddison to take.
She reached out and took his gloved hand, feeling the warm leather on her bare hand was comforting. They walked out of the room together, mason escorting her gently. The girls who wondered the halls looked at the pair oddly as they made their way to the court yard behind the school.
Here the forest lined an open field that currently had many girls lounging on blankets gossiping or reading. Maddison spotted the girl who confronted her in the hallway glaring at her and dropped Mason’s hand immediately. Alarmed he looked at her, “What’s that matter?” he asked the sadness in his voice evident.
Maddison shook her head, “Nothing, just that a bunch of the other girls told Miss Bradley that I was insulting them today during classes. I wouldn’t want them to think you were courting me just to make Miss Bradley put you out.”
Mason fell in step behind her and assumed the position of a trained butler: head up, standing straight, hands behind the back, and an expressionless face. “Is this better Miss?” he asked in a very polite manner.
Maddison turned to look at her friend and all she saw was a butler for hire. She felt bad for saying that to Mason, he probably thought she was embarrassed for being seen with him. She looked at the ground and turned to walk towards the forest, he followed in silence a safe two step distance maintained.
Hiking up her petticoat, Maddison weaved gracefully through the fallen branches in the forest until she found a fallen tree in a clearing. Checking behind her to make sure Mason had followed she headed for the tree and sat down letting her skirts fall back into place. “I’m sorry Mason. I didn’t mean to sound rude, I just don’t want to be left alone here. I really do appreciate your company,” she pleaded as he sat next to her relaxing a bit.
Mason looked at Maddison, she hoped he could see how much of a friend he was to her. Suddenly a smile broke across his face, and she couldn’t help but smile with him. “It’s okay Maddison, I understand. I’ll still be here when you need me,” he said soothingly. “Unfortunately you grandmother has sent a letter requesting my assistance in France, so I will have to be gone for a week or two,” he said grudgingly.
“But that’s not fair! I thought you were my butler, not hers!” Maddison said suddenly enraged. How was she going to deal with being all alone for two weeks?! Maddison stood up from the tree bench and began to pace angrily, “ What could she possibly need you for?” she asked her cheeks darkening a bit.
Mason stood up and stopped Maddison from pacing, “She needs me as your representative so you won’t be left without a dowry once you graduate,” he explained, wiping and angry tear from Maddison’s cheek. “Just come here everyday for break and pretend I’m here. Before you know it I’ll be back to act as butler best friend all over again.”
Maddison stared at him, the anger in her eyes subsiding a little bit. Suddenly Maddison realized that this place would be her refuge for as long as she was to be going to this school. She nodded and turned away from mason so she could wipe the rest of her tears away.
“We should start heading back, your afternoon classes will be starting soon,” said Mason as she grabbed her elbow and led Maddison back out into the field. The girls had seemed to start packing up and getting ready to head back inside for more pointless classes. Instantly Mason let go of her arm and fell in step behind Maddison, assuming the look of a proper butler.
The blonde girl that confronted Maddison came running up to her, “What were you doing in the forest with your butler?” she asked rather snobbishly. Maddison stared at her perplexed for a moment by the question then decided to answer.
“I was hiding,” was all she said and continued to walk towards the school.
The girl insisted on following, ignoring Mason who followed silently behind the two. “From what?” she asked.
“From you and the rest of the girls so I wouldn’t do anything else to offend you,” Maddison replied struggling to keep her temper down. She felt Mason touch her shoulder in warning of her tone and turned to look at the girl. “I’m sorry but this has been a really stressing two days for me. My parents just died, my grandparents abandoned me here, and I’m at risk of losing my dowry. So if you will be so kind as to excuse I would like to go through the rest of my day undisturbed.” With that Maddison turned from the girl and walk into through the doors to the school.
Mason walked close to her shoulder and whispered, “Not exactly how I handled it, but elegant all the same.” The smile on his face was evident ion his voice. Stopping at the main stair case, mason bowed and ascended the stairs as Maddison made her way to her last few classes of the day, writing and French.
