My CompanionA Poem by TastyKittensA free verse poem that I wrote for English 10.
I walk alone, yet I have company.
My companion cannot see, nor is he living. Yet, he matches my stride perfectly. As I am light skinned, he is dark. When the sun falls, he grows taller. If ever I need a friend, I look at him; then I see myself. When darkness comes, he leaves my side. At all times, he is silent. Never has he uttered a word to me, or anyone else. His friends give me a glimpse of things I cannot see. While he can move, he can only do so when I choose. Our world is three dimensional and colorful. His is two dimensional and has but two colors. He cannot feel, yet he touches. He does not breathe, yet you can see his breath in the cold. There are trillions of his kind in the Universe. But, like people, no two are the same. Not one detail can be found on his body. Yet his outline defines the two of us. When I embrace a person, he embraces their companion. He never lies, but he never tells the exact truth. His being is unaltered by the elements, but he is changed by light. Although he is my friend, my companion and my guide, He is nothing more. Than a shadow. © 2010 TastyKittensAuthor's Note
