Fire eyes

Fire eyes

A Poem by Tarah
"

lil bit of pessimism that comes out optimistic in the end

"

I've never seen death.
Never looked on as the light in someone's eyes flickered out.
Although, sometimes I feel as though I have.
And those are the times I wanna shout.
I look on as they stare blankly, the fire's gone out in their eyes.
Love, is a brutal crime to these souls,
Had their flames snuffed out by their old history- old lovers
And now have no hope to let someone light a match for them.
So they wander-
One night stands left with nothing but pennies in hands
Left broke- their hearts robbed of all its wealth,
And how they ache, but never recognize it till another walks by-
Flame held within fingertips
But it burns too much to be held by them-
Hands so frostbitten the warmth only burns
And those with flames lit walk on.
Too warm to wait in the cold.
And I've waited in the cold-
Losing my warmth, hoping they'll catch up before I'm too cold to move on.
No, I've never seen death.
But I've seen the flames blown out.
Replaced with eyes riddled with doubt- and insecurities
But I can still see their breath
and know they must be far from death.
So I'll walk outside next time,
with a blanket and an entire book of matches
And wait till they warm enough to walk again
And welcome them back inside to join the party
Maybe they'll get that familiar spark.
And go home with a smile and a heart beat fast with butterflies.
No, I've never seen death- but seeing lifeless eyes,
Is enough to trick me some days
