The Find

The Find

A Chapter by Tandom

“Do you think it is here?” The young man was holding a pickaxe. A wall of rock stood around him. “Yes. The writings say it could only be awakened here, inside only these grounds.” The middle-aged man held a book in one hand and a pickaxe in the other. The writing was a bunch of unfamiliar symbols from no other language.

“You can’t even read it! How do you know it said here and not someplace like, um, Ireland?” The sounds of clanging pickaxes slowed down. “Have you truly thought this through? I mean, what if this week of digging was all for nothing? The mayor will be mad at us for another wasteful trip.”

The noises against the rock were different now. The vibrations seemed to be going through to another side. Both men were pressing their ears to the wall. Stranger sounds were heard beyond the rocks. The older man stood back and smiled, laughing hyperactively. “I told you we would find something! Ha, and it only took us four years of digging.”

“Four years is still a while, doctor. I might actually be married and have a child right now!”

“After this, you could make all the children you want. Each one will be special and, better, than a normal child you see today.”

Now the clanging sound was faster than before. There was only one problem with their speed. No rubble was coming out. The wall seemed to be regenerating its form after each strike.

Green light covered the wall now. The young man was backed away and his pickaxe was dropped to the ground. Fear covered his face. He noticed that each symbol in the book was flaming the same color green.

As if possessed, he began saying words that made no sense. Leafs were now coming out of the wall. Each leaf seemed to take away a part of the wall.

On the other side was a wide, dark, open room. Green crystals were glowing brighter than the rock wall was. Down below was a slope leading to the middle of the hole. The older man immediately went down with excitement. Something important was down there, only he could know what it did.

The young man followed behind him. Curiosity filled his body the closer they got. “What is it, doctor?”

An object was inside the man’s hands and glowing like the crystals. “Yes. This is the object the book talks about. Now, our new lives will begin!”

I really liked although it is very short. I think you can add some details and describe what is happening more extensively in order to build the tension. But it definitely sounds like a great story.

thanks for the tip.
Don't laugh, just a few title suggestions off the top of my head: "The Glow", "Green Wall", "Possessed", "The Object"? I like the dialogue and the over-all writing, I can picture this in my head quite vividly, so that means you've done well with description, pace, and setting. Check paragraph four: there should be an (s) to make it "years". I'm sure that was by accident, as it happens to all of us when typing :-)
