An Iron Door

An Iron Door

A Chapter by Serenity

Today was Adrian’s 18th year of life, an important day for him. Now turning 18 is an important day for anyone, but when you are a son of the Devil and you turn 18 you are sent on a quest, a quest that will determine whether you rule the underworld or not. Now that is a lot of pressure for an 18 year old demon. This demon child is sent to earth for one year to collect 100 tainted souls. If he finishes his task early then he is congratulated and deemed worthy. If he fails to collect 100 souls he is sent to the farthest corner of hell and tortured for all eternity for his failure. He also loses the right to rule the underworld. If he successfully collects the 100 souls, God will then see him worthy enough to become the next devil and rule over hell as he sees fit. Adrian being a son of the Devil knew he must complete this quest or face the consequences if he were to fail.  Adrian was anxious, curious; he wanted to see what earth was like. The underworld was just like anyone would describe it he thought, cold, dark, the fires would make your insides burn with insufferable intensity, but were freezing to the touch. It felt like some dank dark cave that never saw the light, and that’s kind of what it was. There was an enormous castle in the center where he and his family lived. Gaseous rivers flowed continuously through the realm and any mortal who entered would die in seconds. Screams echoed constantly throughout the place, in fact that is what he fell asleep to most of the nights, but Earth. That was a new exciting place that Adrian had never been before. He often dreamed of what it must look like. He asked himself questions like, were there fires there too, were they cold or warm? Was it dark?  Were people always suffering? Was it anything like the underworld? Adrian strolled down the stairs from his room to the grand throne room. Throwing open the doors he entered the room and bowed before his father. He then stood up tall and calm. Adrian was the eldest of his father’s children. The others before him had failed and were now paying for it. If Adrian succeeded the next 3 eldest children behind him would live while the others were put to death. If at some point during his reign something went amiss or he failed to do his duties, the next in line would take over, in his case it would be his younger sister Katrina, then Sara, and finally his younger brother Dustan. Adrian breathed deeply he refused to fail. His father smiled down on him from his throne.

“Son” he beamed “it is time for you to now face your fate and spend one year above ground serving me and soon to be your realm. You know what your responsibilities are, and what you must do. You also know what will happen if you fail. Now I send you to Earth to fulfill your destiny” his father smiled down at him “I believe in you son, now go and make your father proud to call you his son” he stood up and walked away. Adrian watched him go, leaving his grand throne behind. Someday, Adrian thought, that throne will be mine.  Adrian turned and walked towards the pathway up to earth. This was a big thing for him. This was the moment his quest began, the quest that determined his future. Once he opened that door there was no turning back. He entered the long passageway. It was dark, and wet, he could barely see five feet in front of him. He breathed heavily as his heart raced. Up ahead he saw a little beam of light coming out from under a big iron door. So Earth wasn’t dark, he thought to himself. Pausing before the doorway he took a deep breath and held it then he slowly opened the door that lead to his future.
