Chapter 1

A Chapter by TurtleNamedPeanut
"

Papers are pulled out and the house has fallen. Burning to the ground is our relationship. The bond that will forever be severed. Through the smoke I could see a ray of light.

"

“I need to talk to you.”, Morrell said as he came through the kitchen door, late in the night.

I raised my eyebrow but nodded nonetheless, I didn’t want another fight after yesterdays. He seemed tense as if his dress shirt was constricting him. He even pulled at his collar, as if he was feeling heat in the coldness of the house. I couldn’t help but fidget as I followed him. My hands were wringing as I shuffled along.

We walked towards his office at the end of the hallway. Every step I took quickened the beating of my heart. I could feel it, that today was the day that he was going to pull the papers out.

I looked around the room as we entered, something I couldn’t help but do to calm myself. Although that wasn’t the only reason, it was because I had truly not been inside this room after the night I had found the papers. It almost felt a bit too foreign for me. Despite it all being the same though. The sophisticated sofa at one end with a black love seat. A desk holding all his personal trinkets and a bookshelf. It brought me back to the time when he had confessed that it was just for looks since he wouldn’t truly ever read a book by will. That he had to look ‘smart’, a memory that still makes me smile in nostalgia.

It was short lived though when he sat and stared with a serious expression. One that conveyed that something ‘big’ was going to happen. He gestured for me to sit, and I complied. He slowly reached under his desk, and pulled out a stack of papers. The words burned in my mind, I didn’t even have to look at them. I knew exactly what they were going to say. I slowly got up and walked out. Just as sudden as I got up, he started to protest.

“Stop. I’ll be right back.”, I said, my hand raised. He thankfully complied and sat back down. Leaving the room, I knew exactly what I was going to do. With one goal in mind, I quickly got the papers I needed and walked back to his office. Entering, I threw the papers on the desk, over his divorcement papers and took in his expression. One of shock and disbelief by the way he stared with his mouth open. Slowly, he reached for them and read them over. I could see him swallow and nod.

“You knew?”, he asked lowly.

I didn’t reply. I let out a sigh of relief that I didn’t know I was holding, and relaxed. I was glad that he accepted my propositions. I hadn’t exactly wanted this house, it was too cold for my tastes. The thing that I had my eyes on was the large piece of land out in the nature of a forest near a coast, located near a small but nice town. I had known that he didn’t really like nature, and it was a benefit on my part. I had also wanted at least half of what we had owned in our account since I myself had also earned it and my car. Plus the little belongings that were actually mine. He could keep everything else. I didn’t want it all and I was content with what I asked for. He signed them and passed them on to me. Signing the papers, I nodded to him and told him that I was going to turn them in tomorrow.

“I’m sorry.”, he said, I froze at the entrance of the door.

“No you’re not.”, I simply said and walked out.

‘Tomorrow is the day that we are going to start a new life. You and I.’, I thought to the barely noticeable bump on my stomach.

Sometimes I wish that I could in an open field, a nice blue sky above me, the day nice and warm and just contemplate. But just snuggling in a nice and comfy blanket and hiding in my bed from the cold .. more..
