Midnight Countess Poem
She’s tall,
As pretty as could be.
But she looks lonely.
All she has are the books she reads,
And the three she always talks about.
What happened?
She used to be surrounded by her posse,
Always had helpful information.
Very outward,
Very accepting.
She used to be go outgoing,
But now she hides under that gray cloak.
What happened to the people?
The ones who were always around her,
Protecting her?

Now she cries when I look at her,
And she always gets into fights.
What happened to her brains?
That smart girl we all knew?
She’s been replace.
Replaced by someone who doesn't know anything.
Not unless it involves death.
Or dying.
Or Sweeney Todd.
Or killing.

What happened to the interesting girl?
The one who would go to dances without leaving in the middle?
Or the one who would dance at all.
The one who replaced her doesn't dance anymore.
She can’t even keep the nerds occupied.

She used to be so limber,
Beautiful on her feet.
What happened to the dancer?
The one who was flexible,
And had the guys following her,
Dried tongued and lost like puppies?

What happened to the guy magnet?
Like she was last year when her posse never came?
Having all the guys give her their numbers,
Having them carrying their books.
How all the girls wished to be the Countess.

But what happened to her?

She started to change when those people hung about her,
Two yeas ago.
The ones that carried guns and knives around school,
Killing random people,
And getting away with it.
Why were they hanging around her?
Why would she allow it?

Why was she bruised all around,
But kept claiming it was nothing?
Was it really nothing,
Or was it something?
Why were there cuts up and down her arms,
Her legs?
Was it really as she claimed,
It being because she was always falling from trees?

Why did she always smell like cigarette smoke and beer?
Why was she always tired?
Why was she…different?

The Countess was my best friend,
But now I don’t even know her.
She doesn't talk to anyone,
Yet we all know one thing.

Her parents have always been a problem.
And now that she’s changed,
She has until she finishes high school,
Then they are going to do it.
The one thing that the Countess fears.
The one place where a few other people went.
They will take her to the nut house,
Leave her there to die.

She pretends not to care,
We all know that,
But that is all we know about her.
Where is her stupid posse?
Why does she push me,
Run away and cry when I bring them up?
Why doesn’t she care anymore?

She’s tried to kill herself,
I’ve watched it myself.
Why does she want to die so badly?
What’s been happening?

Why can’t she talk to anyone?
Oh,
Why can’t she even tell me?

They say that one's writing is a reflection of the writer's feelings. Are you by any chance, the reflection of this countess who seemed to have changed so drastically, or that of the friend's who was being so worried of her friend? Anyway, the poem in itself is a wonder. It's both expressive and well-written. It's a depressing poem, I guess, but it makes me rethink my life, and wonder if perhaps, I was like the countess at some point in my life. Good job in writing this.

Keep Writing. ^___^ And if by any chance, your answer in my question awhile ago is 'the countess,' just wanna tell you that I'm here to be the friend. By the way, don't let your cousin affect you.

Oddly enough, I felt that I could relate to this poem. Especially this part: "All she has are the books she reads,"

When I was younger, I often spent a lot of free time in school reading books or staying near the classroom.

I read [at the top] that this is your cousins perception of you. I hope that things get better for you and that you're able to smile naturally and happily sometime soon. Although I can't tell you when, as a person who also went through the tough time of life called "depression", I can guarantee you that things WILL get better.

Take care. *hugs*
