I walked in to the oh-so familiar Chase school, which I had attended in my late 4th early fifth grade. The kids were so small. They waved as I passed by in a red robe. I heard some go ‘Ooooh,” as a smile crossed my face.
I stepped onto the back of the stage, not as familiar. There was Liza, waiting. We listened at the music that was playing, taking frequent glimpses of our audience. They moved as the orchestra played and the Renascence Choir sang. We then watched the dancers as they swiftly moved about the stage. Then it was our turn.
We heard Mr. Lackey talking about Charles Dickens. As we listened, we went out to set the stage. Then it was time. Liza and I looked at each other, and then realized we had already forgotten to do something.
“And in the back round we hear singing,” Mr. Lackey said oh-so casually. Liza and I started laughing, then sang the song, Psallite, a song in Latin, which, translated properly, means Raise Your Psalms. After Ebony Scrooge, played by Olivia, yelled at us, Liza and I broke out laughing.
“I can’t believe we forgot to do that,” Liza laughed.
“I know,” I agreed. “And we worked so hard on the cue too.”
We watched as Cratchet left, Spirit Of Present came, and then it was my turn. I felt exhilaration run through my body. I heard as the children came on cue, whistling and humming the creepy noises. I entered the stage spinning, then tried to stay up and held my little crown on. ‘Bad idea,’ I thought. I stood still for a second, trying to stop the room from spinning.
We went throughout the scene. My face felt hot as I spoke. I was wondering why, in front of little people, I was nervous. Was it because it was in front of kids who would someday be in my shoes? Or was it because it was in front of my old teachers, who never thought I would go this far? Well, whatever it was, it scared me.
When we were finished, we went out for the bow. Well, the others did. They forgot about me.
We then went to go get changed. After that, we watched the Jazz Band, which was really good. The little kids started to sway to the music of Don’t Get Around Much Anymore.
“Ehmygosh!” my friend, Brittney Stickle whispered. “They are the most Ah-dorible things ever!”
I nodded my head. It looked like they were just grooving to the music, as if there was no tomorrow.
“Maybe we’ll have more musicians.” I whispered. This was hopeful. “We only have, like, a handful of musicians at our school.”
This was true.
As we got on the bus, I thought about the performance.
I had forgotten little lines. I believe this was good, hencing that this was the first time for our class using a script. For that, I though it was pretty good.
I thought it was funny that the children got a kick out of my character, since they laughed a lot. The funny thing was that I had 5 minutes to decide what I was going to do and say.
Overall, I think the drama class was very good, though comparing it to the production of Masque Of The Red Death, we had less energy and not as much fun. To me, It seemed as though we didn’t really care about A Christmas Carol as much. But besides that, it was good. I think that everyone tried their best.
