Ball Bearings No.5

Ball Bearings No.5

A Poem by ROXANE DORSEY

On your mark set go
metal wheels
thrills hills
vintage skates
asphalt face
scraps bumps
some lumps
rolling wheels
kissing streets
hills to beat
coasting slow
past windows they go
narrow roads
empty bush
falls the tush
faded yellow lines
summertime
corner cautions
stop sign
stay in line
school zone
tiny voices
book bags
playground
loud sounds
ooouch!

we skate through life...as a kid, usually literally...as we get older, a different kind of skating...bumps and bruises that become more than physical effects...the heart has to bounce back so many times, and the will to go on has to bounce back...roll with the punches...skate into tomorrow...
and often we need to reflect on the past to understand how far we have come.
you are one of the best poets i have read here at WC..

This is chock full of all the things I love in a poem. Great rhyme & rhythm that convey a breathless rush as if hurrying along & showing us how it feels. Amazing title -- so original & unexpected. There are great dynamic phrases thru-out & a few are especially creative: "kissing streets" & "falls the tush" -- great use of uninhibited expression. The ending focuses in on where all this hustle-bustle is leading to, adding another dimension, so we can guess this is a person of school age, etc. This is a fun vignette (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

Great Roxane - I like it. The way you have written it in very short phrase gives it great rhythm and energy to match the subject. You've some very witty little touches on the journey.
Well done.

The format really lent a hand at setting the tone for this piece... it felt like skating downhill, well done!

i like it...your word associations bring nothing but a nodding smile to me as i remember those old skates ..and especially this:
"vintage skates
asphalt face" seemed no matter how tight one turned that key down when you hit light speed is when one of those skates would fly loose ;} loved reading this fun poem from days gone by
